Ode was Lou Adler's label. After selling the very successful Dunhill label to ABC Records in 1967,
Lou formed Ode Records. Ode released rock and roll comedy, and singer/songwriter music. For the first
three years of its existence, it was distributed by CBS (1967-69). In 1970, Adler arranged for
A&M to distribute the label. This lasted until 1976. In 1977, Ode returned to the CBS fold for distribution.
Ode was successful right out of the chute with "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers In Your
Hair)" by Scott McKenzie in the summer of 1967. If ever a song appeared at just the right time it was
during the "Summer of Love" when "San Francisco" zoomed up the charts. The song, co-written and
produced by John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas, seemed to sum up the Hippie movement, and it
became the flower child's anthem.
In 1969, Ode released an album by a group called The City which contained the prolific songwriter
Carole King. The City album stiffed. After switching distribution from Columbia to his old partner
Herb Alpert's label, A & M, Adler tried again with Carole King with a solo album called Writer: Carole
King, and again success was elusive. Adler did not give up, and released a third Carole King album
called Tapestry. Carole King finally broke through to mass popularity as a singer with this album;
it raced up the charts and became the biggest selling album up to that time. The album spawned several
hit singles, including "I Feel The Earth Move," "So Far Away," "It's Too Late" and "You've Got A Friend."
Ode also had success with the comedy team of Cheech and Chong. Their drug-laced humor seemed
funny at the time, but has not held up well over the years. Ode Records issued new material into 1978.
Tracks on each album are listed in the order they appear on the album. An asterisk (*) before the record
number indicates we do not have information on the correct playing sequence of the tracks, and
consequently they are listed in alphabetical order for that album.

77000 series (A&M distribution, 1970-1976)
The first Ode label on this series was white with black printing. There are three concentric curved silver bands in the upper left corner of the label and an "Ode 70" symbol is in the upper right corner of the label, with the "0" in "70" being the Ode logo in a circle. This label was used in 1970 and 1971.
In 1971 and 1972, a second design was used, with a small Ode logo within a silver
circle replacing the "Ode 70" logo. On these issues (shown), the three silver curves at the top left
of the label were actually a large, slanted part of a huge Ode logo.
| |
The third Ode label on this series is white with black printing. There are three curved silver bands in the
upper left corner of the label (now concentric like the first label, rather than a portion of a logo) and a
larger Ode symbol is in the upper right corner of the label. "Ode Records Inc." in silver directly below the
emblem. This label was used from about 1973 to 1975.

CBS consolidated series (1976-):
The Ode label on this series was tan (a background pattern made up of tiny Ode and Epic logos) with black printing. The "Ode" emblem was to the right of the center hole, sometimes alongside an "Epic" emblem in dark brown. Some issues (such as JE 34967) had custom labels. The initial series of albums were reissues of the Ode/A&M discs, which gives a pretty good indication of which of the albums were still selling by 1977. The first album listed below was originally to be issued in 1974, but may have been shelved for some reason. In any case, CBS issued it in 1978.

1032 - The Rocky Horror Picture Show Audience Par-ti-ci-pation Album - Various Artists [1983] An oddity is Ode 1032 (no prefix). This double LP was an unsuccessful attempt to duplicate "Rocky" fans' tradition of talking to the screen during the movie. There are at least three LP pressings: one reissue has added cover copy - "The Original Soundtrack to the Original Soundtrack to the Original Movie" - in light blue script; another version has the extra text in red script. The track listing, as it appears on the jacket and labels, is as follows: Side 1 begins with a welcome by Sal Piro and ends with "The Time Warp"//Side 2 begins with "Sweet Transvestite" and ends with "Charles Atlas Reprise"//Side 3 begins with the Bedroom Scenes and ends with "Planet Schmanet"//Side 4 begins with "The Floor Show" and ends with "Science Fiction Double Feature Reprise" |
