Atlantic Album Discography, Part 11
Miscellaneous Series

By David Edwards, Patrice Eyries, and Mike Callahan
Last update: February 27, 2000

Atlantic issued quite a few short series in addition to their main pop and jazz series. The 3000 series was a jazz series that lasted from 1965-67 with only eight issues. The 4000 and 7100 series were even shorter, with but one item in each.

SD-7101, however, is of particular note. It is evidence that Atlantic did indeed record in true stereo as early as 1957. Although the stereo recordings did not come out at the time, years later we were treated to the stereo versions of such classics as "What'd I Say" and several other hits by Ray Charles, an alternate take of "Drip Drop" by the Drifters, and an entire album full of lost stereo gems on History of Rhythm & Blues, Volume 4 [Atlantic SD-8164]. Unfortunately, the Atlantic Records of today has people running the label who prefer monaural, and much of the CD output is mono even when stereo is available.

Atlantic also reissued much of the pre-1970 Stax material on the 7700 series. These albums were exact reissues of the earlier albums on Stax.

Also included on this page are the Atlantic-Atco Sampler, the Atlantic Group album, and the special Foreigner numbers from 1978-81 that all ended in "999."
