Although there are several stereo releases listed on this page, Columbia did not begin issuing stereo
albums until the last half of 1958, which falls on the next page. The stereo versions on this page are
either much later rechanneled "back-fills" in the catalog, or versions recorded in true stereo at the time but
released months later. A few of the early true stereo albums ran into problems because not all the tracks
on the mono counterpart were available in stereo. For those cases, Columbia's tactic in those early days
of stereo was either to substitute stereo songs for those only available in mono, or to delete the songs for
the stereo release. Later, they would not bother with these sort of "purist" actions; they'd just toss a
rechanneled track in the middle of a stereo album.
Mono albums on this page had the "six eye" label, with the deep groove (far left). Promotional albums had a white label with red print (near left). | ||
The stereo counterpart of the "six eye" label is shown at far left, with the promotional stereo black-and- white label shown at near left. These early stereo issues also had the deep groove. |
