With the change to the two-eye label, Columbia went back to a black-on-white promotional label as
shown below, although they had the stickers handy when they ran out of a given album's white-label
copies. At the same time, they introduced a "timing strip" that pasted on the bottom front of the album
cover for promotional copies. Since Columbia up to that time rarely indicated the timing of the tracks
either on the label or the jacket, this timing strip was to help disc jockeys with programming by revealing
the running times for each band. Promotional men would also use this strip to make check marks or circle
the cuts they were pushing for play. If you were a record collector who didn't specialize in promo copies,
the timing strips were quite annoying, since they obscured the artwork and were impossible to remove
without tearing up the cover.
Columbia also reissued another slew of rechanneled albums, to much advertised fanfare, in March, 1963.
The mono releases on this page used the first variation of the "two eye" label (far left), which was red with a white "COLUMBIA" at the top bending around the top edge. Near the bottom of the label, in small black letters, was "GUARANTEED HIGH FIDELITY." The stereo counterpart (near left) was similar, but the black lettering near the bottom was larger and said "360 SOUND" STEREO "360 SOUND." | ||
Promotional copies had a white label with black print (far left), and often sported a "timing strip" at the bottom of the front of the album jacket (near left). |

CL-1986/CS-8786 - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan [5-27-63, recalled] Original
pressing of this album had four tracks subsequently deleted and others substituted. The original albums
were recalled and destroyed, but some, possibly as many as 300, escaped destruction and are now pricey
collectors' items. The deleted tracks were made available on late-1960s bootleg albums and more recently
on reissue LPs and CDs. There are several variations. Mono albums with the deleted tracks are known
to have covers and labels with the replacement tracks. These can be identified by playing the record, or
by the matrix numbers (first pressing with the deleted tracks have matrix numbers for side one of XLP-
58717-1A and for side two XLP-58718-1A). Promo versions or Canadian versions with the deleted songs
listed either on the cover, label, or timing strip have been found that have the replacement tracks when
played. Stereo versions of this first pressing are exceedingly rare. Deleted tracks are noted below with
an asterisk (*). Blowin' In The Wind/*Rocks And Gravel [Listed on the cover as "Solid Road"]/A Hard
