Columbia Main Series, Part 1:
GL 500 to CL 599 (1951-1954)

By Mike Callahan and David Edwards
Last update: October 11, 2015

The Columbia 500 Series of 12" albums began with black labels and a GL- prefix. This lasted for the first 24 issues, or until the albums issued on May 1, 1953. When the next two albums were issued on August 31, 1953, Columbia changed to the red labels with the CL- prefix. Many, if not most, of the early black-label GL- prefix albums were reissued with the new red label.

Actually, most of the albums on this page have been reissued from time to time. The early black labels gave way to second pressings with the red labels and third pressings with the "CBS eye" label. Columbia also redesigned many covers when the albums were reissued. For example, the Quiet Music series which started with GL 510 started (at least the first nine of the ten volumes) with a series of monochrome photos of a couple in an intimate setting, primarily in the bedroom. The same two models were used for all the different volumes, but in different poses. Sometime after the switch to the red label in mid-1953, the series was reissued (using the red label for all volumes), but with a single cover design and photo for all volumes.

Others, such as the Mitch Miller/Percy Faith album [CL 551], had redigned covers that Columbia felt were more modern. Some albums, such as CL 522-524, not only got redesigned covers, but were given new catalog numbers, also, to make the albums appear to have been recently released.

The first 24 albums issued in the 500 series originally had a GL- prefix and used a black label with silver print (far left). Starting with 525, the label changed to red with a light gold print (near left). Both of these labels had what is generally known as a "deep groove" under the gold ring about a half-inch inside the label edge. This groove was an artifact of the early pressing machines.
The Quiet Music series started with covers using a series of photos of a couple in an intimate setting. Each volume had the same two models, but in different poses. Later, Columbia changed the covers to a generic cover used for reissued volumes, with different background colors for each different volume. Still later, reissues (see Volumes 9 and 10 [CL 519 and 532, below]) used a different generic cover design.
