Fantasy Records began their 12-inch album series in 1955 with the 3200 series. When stereo came
in sometime later, they started numbering stereo albums in the 8000 series as they were issued, having
no numerical relationship to their mono counterparts. This was corrected later. Most if not all of the mono
albums on this page were originally issued on red vinyl. The stereo versions were for the most part
issued on blue vinyl, but some were issued on red vinyl. We have noted the vinyl colors we have seen
for these albums, but there may be others.
The mono label (far left) was maroon or red, with gold print. The corresponding stereo label (near left) was blue with silver print. There was a ring about two-thirds of the way from the center hole to the label edge, and this ring was at the place where a deep groove was in the record; these became known as "Deep Groove" or "DG" pressings. It was not uncommon for the early albums in this series to have one title on the album jacket, while having a different one on the label itself. For example, the mono label shown as Music for Dreaming by the Elliot Lawrence Band had a jacket title of Dream with the Elliot Lawrence Orchestra. |

Note: Before this point, all albums were initially issued in monaural only, with stereo versions being released years later, mostly in rechanneled stereo. From here, albums start to be issued in mono and stereo at the same time. Mono records from this point were mostly issued on red vinyl, and stereo issues from this point were generally issued on blue vinyl. The first two stereo albums (8001 and 8002) were issued on red vinyl, but 8001 is also known on blue vinyl. | |
