King/Federal/DeLuxe Discography, Part 1:The 10-inch Lp series was not the first series of albums released by King. Previously, a series of
78-rpm multi-disc albums had been issued at least to No. 7, but we do not have much information on
these.
The King 10-inch Lp series began with number 1. The price of the album was included in the record
catalog number as a catalog prefix (i.e., King 295-1). The first album was priced at $2.95, but from
there, a wide variety of prices ensued: $2.19, $2.65, $1.99, $1.59, and $1.79. Near the end of the
series, most of the albums were $2.95.
King began being included in the Schwann Long Playing Record Catalog in the March, 1953, issue. In
that issue, over a dozen albums were offered, both before the 21-63 gap and also after the gap. We
have dated these records as "2/53," the month before the nominal issue date. All of these were listed as
being new that month. It is possible the actual release date was earlier, if King just got around to
submitting their catalog to Schwann. For those albums dated as "1953," all are listed in the January,
1954, Schwann Long Playing Record Catalog and none are listed as new, so they would have been first
listed some time between May, 1953, and December, 1953 (there were no new King listings in April,
1953). New 10-inch King releases were not added to the Schwann catalog after 1953.
The King discography appearing on the backs of the early 10 inch albums does not list releases
between 21 and 63, nor does Michael Ruppli in his King Discography, which is based on files from King
Records.
It now appears that at least some of those numbers were used for King issues, although apparently they
were not manufactured by King Records. The 10-inch album issues between #21 and at
least #63 appear to be the result of an agreement between Syd Nathan and Eli Oberstein of the Record
Corporation of America in the 1951-1953 period. Syd Nathan evidently wanted to expand his musical
genres from jazz, country and R&B into pop and classical, and the agreement with smooth-talking
wheeler-dealer Oberstein seemed like a quick and easy way to do that. This agreement allowed King to
release Varsity label records with King covers and labels. According to the Blue Pages web site by David
Diehl, King 105-21 was the same as Varsity 6901 up to possibly King 105-73 which was Varsity 6953.
Nathan agreed to reserve his catalog numbers 21-63 for these Oberstein-manufactured clones of Varsity
albums. Somehow the agreement wasn't perfectly clear, as Oberstein kept issuing King-jacketed
versions of his Varsity records past the agreed-upon 105-63, going to about 105-73 and causing a
numerical overlap between the Oberstein-manufactured 105-64 to 105-73 and King-manufactured
295-64 to 295-73. The latter were releases using King masters, not material from the Record
Corporation of America.
Whether King versions of all the Varsity albums between 6901 and 6953 were actually released
is not known. What is not in doubt is that many of the numbers were issued with King covers.
King K105-35 by the Harmonaires shows up occasionally at auction for high prices and several others
are known to exist (see cover and label scans below).
The King records produced by Varsity had a list price of $1.05. While the records in this series were not
recorded or manufactured by King, they were sold through King Distributors. The
front cover carried the King logo printed on it instead of Varsity, and the back cover had a listing of the
available albums between King K 105-21 and King K 105-63. (When Oberstein ran out of King-labeled
records, he was known to sometimes substitute Varsity-labeled albums, so not all of the King covers
have King labels inside.). The Varsity Christmas records and children's records are not known to have
been released on King, and they were not included on the King discography printed on the back of the
King/Varsity albums (shown at right). This includes numbers 25, 30, 32, 47, 50 and 51.
The Record Corporation of America also supplied a King classical 200 series in the 1951 to 1953 period.
List price of these records was $2.69. This King series was made up of Record Corporation of America
releases of their Allegro Royale 1200 series with King covers and probably King labels. Numbers are
derived from the last three digits of Allegro Royale LP's, for example King 295-201 was Allegro Royale
1201. Most of the artist's credited on Oberstein's albums are pseudonyms for the real performers. Much
of the material was from sources in Germany after World War II, with a good portion of it derived from
transcriptions of live German radio broadcasts, taken from the recorded masters stored in the radio
station archives. Oberstein was sued in the early 1950s by soloists whose voices could be recognized,
and lost the case, but claimed he was duped by the people selling the recordings to him.
Lawsuits aside, Eli Oberstein had a reputation as one of the most unscrupulous record producers ever
and most of his operations skirted the law, but stayed just inside the line. This included recording in
Mexico during the artists' strike in World War II, and naming his company Record Corporation of
America (RCA), hopefully to be confused with the "real" RCA, the Radio Corporation of America. About
the only good thing you can say about the Oberstein records is that they did preserve some recordings
that were lost in the chaotic aftermath of World War II. The problem for researchers is to figure out the
names of the actual performers on the recordings. Some researchers have spent much time comparing
the Allegro/Royale/Varsity/Ultraphonic recordings with others to obtain correct artist information.

The King 10 inch album label (far left) was dark red with silver printing, with "KING" in silver in a straight line at the top of the label. At the bottom of the label is "LONG PLAYING" between the LONG and PLAYING is 33 1/3 with a crown above it. The Varsity-manufactured King albums (near left) had a label similar to the regular King label, but more of a maroon color than red. The label also had some added verbiage near the top of the ring concerning patents, "Made in U.S.A.," and "Unbreakable in normal use." |
|
| The Federal 10 inch album label (far left) had a similar design to the King label, with "Federal" in script replacing "KING" at the top. The Federal label was green with silver print, and did not have the crown over 33 1/3. The DeLuxe 10 inch album label (near left) was green like the Federal label, with "DeLuxe" replacing "Federal" at the top. |
|
| For the 12-inch King Classical series, both maroon (far left) and red (near left) labels have been found. |
