The High Fidelity Recording Company was established in 1956 in Hollywood, California. "Hi-fi" was
a popular slang term in the 1950s meaning both the quality of sound, and also the phonograph system
used to play records. Referring to the system as a "hi-fi" was gradually replaced by referring to it as a
"stereo" system in the 1960s, and "hi-fi" became somewhat out-of-style and sounded "old." Today, of
course, even the term "stereo" when used to denote equipment sounds hopelessly out-of-date.
The president of the company was Richard Vaughn. They issued recordings on three different labels,
HiFi, Arvee and Orbit, and also "the Life Series" on HiFi, which is usually mistakenly called the "Life"
label due to the large logo. The HiFi Label recorded popular, jazz, gospel, sound effects and spoken
word, although the albums released on HiFi were primarily jazz and popular with a heavy emphasis on
organ records by George Wright and Hawaiian music by Arthur Lyman. In fact, by the standards of the
1990s, most of the output from HiFi would fall neatly under the term "lounge music." Lyman was once a
member of the Martin Denny Trio, so if Lyman's and Denny's music sounded similar, there was a good
reason. A&R for the label was by Dave Axelrod and Chuck Weed.
The Orbit Label subsidiary was established in 1958. Most of the single releases on Orbit were pop and
folk, and we believe that no albums were released on this label. On the singles side, it appeared that not
only did HiFi and Orbit share a numbering system, but they shared their cadre of artists as well. Arthur
Lyman, George Wright, Scott Engel, and others recording for Orbit seemed to move from that label to
HiFi and back again at the whim of the management.
The Arvee Label was formed in 1959. The "Arvee" name was derived from Richard Vaughn, the
company president's initials, "R.V." A&R for the Arvee label was by Cliff Goldsmith and Fred Smith, with
some production by Marty Cooper and H.B. Barnum. The output of the label was popular music and
rhythm and blues, and unlike the HiFi/Orbit artists, Arvee's artists did not do any label hopping to HiFi or
Orbit.
The biggest success of the Arvee label was a rock and roll group called the Olympics. The Olympics had
their first hit in 1958 for Si Aronson's Demon Records (of Hollywood, CA) with "Western Movies," a
Coasters-type novelty number. The Olympics moved to Arvee in 1959, and had several hits including
"Big Boy Pete," "(Baby) Hully Gully," "Little Pedro," and "Dance by the Light of the Moon". The Olympics
had three albums on Arvee; the mono versions are scarce, but the stereo versions have all but
disappeared.
After the Olympics left Arvee, they had a couple of hits in 1963 on the Tri-Disc
label out of Los Angeles ("The Bounce" and "Dancin' Holiday"), produced by Fred Smith, who had
done A&R at Arvee. The stereo version of their lone Tri-Disc album is also quite rare, if it exists at all. In
1965, they had a flop on the Loma label with "Good Lovin'," but a year later it was remade into a giant hit
by the Young Rascals for Atlantic.
Then, as far as collectors were concerned, the trouble started. In 1966 the Olympics signed with
Mirwood, a Los Angeles-based company that also had the Mira and Surrey labels, and posted two hits,
"Mine Exclusively" and "Baby Do The Philly Dog." Mirwood was run by Randy Wood, ex-Vee-Jay
executive (not the Randy Wood from Dot Records). Wood decided to put out an album on the group, but
since he had only two minor hits, opted to re-record the Olympics' old hits from Demon, Arvee, and Tri-
Disc to include in an album called Something Old, Something New [Mirwood MS-7003]. These
re-recorded versions have been widely available since 1966 for reissue and have been included in a
vast majority of the reissues and various artist albums where the Olympics appear, much to the
annoyance of collectors. More recently, both Ace (UK) and DCC (US) have tracked down the original
Arvee masters to put history straight on their reissues.
The other Arvee hit maker was the Marathons, who scored with "Peanut Butter" in 1961. The Marathons
had some, if not total, personnel overlap with the Vibrations on Checker (who had in 1956 been known
as the Jayhawks of "Stranded in the Jungle" fame on Flash Records). Checker acquired the "Peanut
Butter" master through contract-infringement litigation, and Arvee assembled a new group with that
name for subsequent releases, including the album. "Peanut Butter," was a tongue-in-cheek (...sorry)
rewrite of the words of the Olympics' "(Baby) Hully Gully." In fact, this wasn't the only time an Olympics
hit was rewritten; the Kingsmen's 1965 hit "Jolly Green Giant" was a rewrite of "Big Boy Pete" (written
and first recorded by Don & Dewey on Specialty).
The HiFi labels were sold by 1965 to the Everest label (best known for Gloria Lynne's catalog
and a raft of grocery-store budget albums), and today remain part of "the Everest Group." Everest
continued issuing albums after they acquired HiFi, and did quite well reissuing the Arthur Lyman catalog
for several decades.
HiFi was into stereo fairly early, and put out several stereo singles in 1959 on both the HiFi and the Orbit
labels. Stereo on all albums is designated by an S before the initial prefix, for example R-411 is
monaural, SR-411 is stereo.
The first HiFi label (far left) was silver with black print. The label name was in caps on one line at the
top, with "HIFI" in black and "RECORD" in red. Around the bottom of the label was "MANUFACTURED
BY HIGH FIDELITY RECORDINGS, INC., 6087 SUNSET BLVD., HOLLYWOOD 28, CALIF." Unlike
most labels, whose stereo issues used a special stereo jacket, HiFi stereo issues were designated on
the (mono) front jackets with a large silver sticker (near left) that said, "This is an incomparable HiFi
Stereo Disc by High Fidelity Recordings, Inc." Most HiFi records used this label for stereo albums; the
Life Series used a "STEREO" overprint. |
||
The second label was slightly different for mono (far left) and stereo (near left) versions. Both were
silver with black print, and both had "HIFI RECORD" three times around the black edge band, with "HIFI"
in silver and "RECORD" in red. Mono labels had the side designation in a large red number running
down through the center hole between the two columns denoting songs and publishing information for
that side of the LP. Stereo issues had the word "STEREO" in block letters rotated 90 degrees replacing
the large number designating the side. The side designation on stereo issues was in small letters at the
bottom of the label. |
||
The second label had a counterpart for HiFijazz releases (shown at far left). It was silver with black print,
with "hifi jazz" four times around the black edge band of the label, with "hifi" in silver and "jazz" in red.
The mono, stereo, and jazz versions of this second label had, in red lettering at the bottom, just inside
the black band, "HIGH FIDELITY RECORDINGS, INC., 7803 SUNSET BLVD., HOLLYWOOD". The first
label for the Life Series (near left) was red with black print. The "Life" logo was above the center hole in
white cursive letters. |
||
When HiFi was sold to Everest Records about 1965, the Life Series label changed to yellow with black
print, with the "Life" logo smaller and in a straight line rather than at a slant like on the red labels.
Arthur Lyman's Greatest Hits was issued on a gold label with the same design. Interestingly, the
reissue of Life 1004 (far left) used the original album title (Percussion Spectacular) on the label,
although the jacket used the newer title, "Yellow Bird". Some HiFi issues were also known to have been
reissued with this yellow Life label, such as HiFi 721. |
||
The first Arvee label (far left) was orange with black printing. "arvee" in alternating black and orange blocks around the perimeter of the label, with the typical HiFi side designation number down the middle of the label. This label was used on almost all of the Arvee albums. Album A-434 had a different label (near left); it was yellow with black printing, with "arvee" in alternating black and yellow wedges above the center hole. The Arvee albums themselves did not have their own series of release numbers, but were released in the HiFi Records 400 series. |
