Mustang Album Discography

In early 1965, Bob Keane apparently felt his Del-Fi and Donna labels were dated, so he started two new labels with kinetic, exciting names: Mustang and Bronco. Many of the early artists on these labels were transfers from the Del-Fi/Donna labels. The Bronco label did not release any albums, but the Mustang label quickly became known as the home of the Bobby Fuller Four. After two local hits in 1965 in the L.A. area ("She's My Girl" [Mustang 3004] and "Let Her Dance" [Mustang 3012, leased to Liberty and reissued as Liberty 55812, where it made #133 nationally]), Fuller scored with a remake of a 1960 post-Buddy Holly Crickets tune that he had recorded earlier for the Texas-based Exeter label [Exeter 124, a different recording]. The new version of "I Fought the Law" [Mustang 3014], entered the national charts in January, 1966, eventually reaching #9. Two more chart records followed, "Love's Made A Fool Of You" [Mustang 3016], a Buddy Holly remake which reached #26 in May, and "The MagicTouch" [Mustang 3018], which topped out at #117 in July. Two days after "The Magic Touch" entered the charts on July 16, Bobby Fuller was found dead of an apparent suicide in his car in front of his apartment. The group was over.

After losing two of his stars to tragedies, Bob Keane later admitted that he was burned out. The Mustang label continued for another year, with one more chart hit ("It May Be Winter Outside" by Felice Taylor, which charted in January, 1967 and reached #42 pop and #44 R&B), but it was mainly being run by producer Barry White. Keane closed Mustang down in mid-1967.

Both the singles label (far left) and the albums label (near left) for Mustang were red with black printing, with the horse head Mustang logo at the top. Mono album issues had the "M-" prefix, stereo issues the "MS-" prefix.

Contains all the tracks from KRLA King of the Wheels [Mustang MS-900] and I Fought the Law [Mustang MS-901], with a bonus disc (in it's own cardboard cover with original artwork) consisting of what would have been the third Bobby Fuller Four album Celebrity Night At PJ's, the unreleased Mustang MS- 902. Why it went unreleased probably had to do with Fuller's death, but the crowd noise is high and the mix isn't wonderful, so that may have had something to do with it, too. Disc #1 starts with the entire I Fought the Law album, but due to song overlaps with KRLA King of the Wheels, the additional tracks for King of the Wheels are scattered on Disc #2.
