Mercury Album Discography, Part 1:
Mercury A-10 Series (78rpm & 45rpm Albums)

By Mike Callahan, David Edwards, Randy Watts, and Patrice Eyries
Last update: November 11, 2008

Inside of album A-17, showing liner notes Mercury began issuing albums in early 1946. These "albums" were a collection of 78rpm singles in stiff paper sleeves a bound book, as shown at right. It's similarity to a photograph album caused it to be referred to as a "record album." Later, of course, counterparts on 33-1/3rpm were also by extension called "albums," and even later, compact discs were loosely called "albums."

The early Mercury albums used the prefix "A-" for "album." The earliest series started in 1946 with A-10, and by 1949, 45rpm counterparts of some of the 78s were being issued. These used the same "A-" prefix, but added "x45" to the end of the catalog number. The A-10 series switched mainly to 45rpm release in 1951, and continued to 1952, when the series was discontinued.

Many of the 78rpm and 45rpm albums were eventually also issued on 10-inch, 33-1/3rpm long playing records, and later on 12-inch LPs. The 10-inch LPs in the MG-25000 (MG = "microgroove") series generally added two songs to the six-song albums in the A-10 series to complete the normal eight-song format of the 10-inch LP. The 12-inch LPs in the MG-20000 series generally contained twelve songs.
