Crown Album Discography, Part 1:
CLP-5001 to CLP-5099/CST-101 to CST-131 (1957-1959)

By Mike Callahan, David Edwards, Patrice Eyries, Randy Watts and Tim Neely
Last update: March 13, 2011

The first 52 issues used a small three-pointed crown logo on the front cover. At 5053, this changed to an upright box which stated, "Crown Records High Fidelity Stereophonic Record," whether the disc was mono or stereo. The cover logo again changed at about 5075, to an oval with "Crown Records" inside. The label design remained the same throughout this time.

The Crown label used for all the issues on this page was black with silver print. The mono version (far left) had "crown" in lower case letters bending around the top edge of the label. A small three pointed crown was at the bottom of the label. The stereo albums were issued on red vinyl. These had a slightly different black label design (near left), with a drawing of the British Imperial State crown. Both labels had the address of 9317 W. Washington Blvd., Culver City, Calif.
The early Crown covers (far left) had no banners on the bottom. Later reissues (near left) had indications of reissue like the "FULL COLOR HIGH FIDELITY" banners along the bottom of the record jacket. Since Crown just slightly reduced the size of the front slick for reissue, the cover usually looks the same on reissue pressings as the originals (in this case, the original was from 1957). The "HIGH FIDELITY" at the bottom is actually part of the bend-around back slick, so depending on which back slicks they were using at the time, the album cover would look different. By looking at this discography and determining the dates for the different "looks" of Crown, one can tell when the reissue was pressed, to a certain degree. In this example, this type of HIGH FIDELITY banner was used between #5207 in early 1961 and about #5288 in very early 1963, so the reissue was most likely pressed in 1961 or 1962. The labels on the disc would correspond to this time frame, also.

Holiday Polka/Beer Barrel Polka/Hop Scotch Polka/Lovers Polka/Fanny Shake Polka/Hi Fi Polka//Saturday Night Polka/Polka Dot Polka/Weinerschnitzel Polka/Merry Go Round Polka/Bavarian Polka/Royal Polka Note: This record is identical to Promenade 2205, Polka Time by Stanley Pulaski's Orchestra. Most of the titles on that album are different [Julayda Polka/Beer Barrel Polka/Clarinet Polka/Helen Polka/Scare Crow Polka/Grey Mare Polka//New York Polka/Television Polka/Synthetic Polka/Delia Polka/Limehouse Polka/Milwaukee Polka] but the two albums are identical when played. The recording includes selections by two different orchestras: the first nine selections are by an American group; the remaining three seem to be by a European — possibly German or Bavarian — orchestra. The song listed as "Bavarian Polka" and "Limehouse Polka" is actually a schottische. To make matters more interesting, there was an earlier 78rpm EP credited to Al Stevens [Deresco 60] whose tracks are listed as New York Polka, Part 1/New York Polka, Part 2//Television Polka/Radio Polka. Upon listening, "Radio Polka" is identical to "Hi Fi Polka", "New York Polka, Part 1" is identical to "Saturday Night Polka", and "New York Polka, Part 2" is identical to "Polka Dot Polka." This gives a fascinating glimpse into the world of budget records. The same songs were frequently renamed or artists renamed in order to reissue old material and make it seem new.

CLP-5056 - Jazz Confidential - Various Artists [1958] Issued in monaural only. Note: At about this point, the logo changes to an oval with multicolor blocks in which is printed "Crown records". A few later albums which had gone to the printer before the changeover took place (e.g., 5079-5089) still had the old "box" logo.

CLP-5085/CST-119 stereo - Port of Suez: Exotic Music of the Middle East - (Artist not identified) [1958] Original stereo copies issued on red vinyl. Another interesting look into the practices of the budget record companies in the late 1950s. Much of this LP also appeared on Coronet 55 (The Music of Port Said credited to Mohammed El-Sulieman & His Oriental Ensemble), Broadway 1027 (East of Suez, artist unidentified), and Pirouette 16 (Music of the Near East credited to Ali Beirut's Orchestra). The Coronet, Broadway, and Pirouette albums play exactly the same. Titles on the Coronet and Broadway LPs are identical (Temptacious/Whirling Sands/Jazz Of Araby/Chifti/Hora//Owo Solo/Hasapiko Bolero/Husson's Rhapsody/International Dance/Cosmopolitan). Although the Pirouette LP plays the same, the song titles differ (Near East/Romance Of The Fiddle/Drums Of The Desert/Call Of The Near East/Desert Dance Madness//Cosmopolitan Whirl/Exotic Dance/Night Love/Temptation Of The Desert Sun And Moon/Whirling Sand). This Crown album has some tracks that are the same and some that are not on the other albums, but they sound like the same orchestra and recording session. Titles on the Crown album, with references in brackets to the songs on the other LPs, are: Stardust At Dawn ["Whirling Sands"/"Romance of the Fiddle"]/Warm Wind [instrumental version of "Hora"/"Desert Dance Madness"]/Dancing Girls [not on the other LPs]/Suez ["Jazz Of Araby"/"Drums Of The Desert"]/Sand Dunes ["Cosmopolitan"/"Whirling Sand"]//Night Madness [instrumental version of "Temptacious"/"Near East"]/Summer Rain ["Hasapiko Bolero"/"Exotic Dance"]/Harem Girls [not on other LPs]/Rebel Camp [not on other LPs]/Desert Caravan ["Owo Solo"/"Cosmopolitan Whirl"].
