Soul Album Discography
by David Edwards, Mike Callahan and Patrice Eyries
Last update: July 30, 2012

The Soul label was active from 1964 to 1978 and was intended to be the Motown outlet for blues and rhythm and blues recordings.

The two major hitmakers for the label were Jr. Walker & the All Stars and Gladys Knight & the Pips, although the label was quite successful getting its product on the record charts. Other artists included Jimmy Ruffin (and brother David), the Originals, the Monitors, Shorty Long, Earl VanDyke, the Fantastic Four, and Major Lance.

The first Soul label (far left) was white with black printing, "SOUL" vertically to the left of the center hole in purple. This label was used on 701 and 702. The second Soul label (near left) was three shades of purple with silver printing; "SOUL" was above the center hole in white with a white box around it. This label was used until the end of the series.
The deejay label (far left) was the same design on white with black print. The singles label (near left) for most of the series was similar to the second album label.
