Evon Album Discography

Evon Records was a short-lived 1950s/1960s budget label. It was originally a budget outlet for Rondo/Rondo-lette, as the early albums were reissues from that label or other labels from Eli Oberstein's Record Corporation of America labels. Original Evon "labels" were black with silver print, but were "paperless," that is, the labels were printed on the vinyl, not on paper labels. In fact, as far as printing technique, the early Evon labels looked exactly like the Rondo- lette 10" stereo album labels. The label address on the back of the jacket was initially given as "West New York, New Jersey," the same general address as Acorn Records, another Rondo subsidiary. The albums, like other Rondo products, featured a generic discography of the label's albums on the back of the jackets.

Eli Oberstein's son apparently initially sold Rondo/Rondo-lette, along with its subsidiaries Evon and Acorn, to Precision Radiation Instruments (PRI), Inc., who owned Tops, Golden Tone, etc. PRI began adding a Golden Tone logo to the album covers, and even used the generic Golden Tone back album jacket. Sometimes, the albums were even known to have an Evon jacket with a Golden Tone label record inside. The address on the back of these albums was the address of PRI, namely, 5810 S. Normandie Ave., Los Angeles. They used a paper version of the black label, similar to the Tops label matte black paper, and the records were pressed with a deep groove in the label area to help stabilize the paper label.

Sometime after Album 351 was issued, the credits on the back of the jackets (now restored to the discographies) changed to "Hudson Record Company, 418 Lafayette St., New York 3, New York." The paper label changed to yellow with black print, and the Golden Tone logos were removed from these reissues. This is the same address that began appearing on the Acorn label. It is not known what connection Hudson Records had with PRI, but they were possibly a subsidiary.

Apparently, most of the catalog numbers shared the same basic jacket design, with the logo at the top left, the title just below that across the jacket, and a square photo taking up most of the lower right part off the album cover. Song titles were at left of the photo. occasionally this was changed slightly, with the photo enlarged to cover the whole bottom of the jacket.

330 - Best of Broadway [label copy title: Broadway Show Hits] - Paul Payne & His Orchestra [196?] Same as Acorn 602. This is a mess. The track lineups, as given on the label, are as follows (note that "Mary's A Grand Old Name" is listed on both sides, and actually appears on both sides - - same version!). As for "Paul Payne," this is a mish-mash of songs from a lot of different sources, so "Paul Payne," at least as far as being the artist for all tracks on a coherent album, is fictitious. To top things off, the photo on the front cover is unintentionally comical. It shows a couple on a date in a horse-drawn carriage, ostensibly riding in Central Park on the way to Broadway, but she looks like she would rather be anywhere but where she is, with this guy! Shine On Harvest Moon/My Hero/Gypsy Love Song/Mary's A Grand Old Name/The Merry Widow/Kiss Me Again/March Of The Toys//Give My Regards To Broadway/You're A Grand Old Flag/Mary's A Grand Old Name/So Long Mary/Harrigan/45 Minutes From Broadway/When We Are M-A-Double-R-I-E-D/The Yankee Doodle Boy. Actually, side one has eight tracks and side two has ten tracks, as opposed to the listed seven and eight. The three songs not listed appear to be "Oklahoma," which appears on side 1, cut 1, before the listed tracks, "Over There," and a march we don't recognize. Side two contains the two extra tracks and is in a different order from that listed. The correct order is: Give My Regards To Broadway/You're A Grand Old Flag/So Long Mary/Over There/The Yankee Doodle Boy/Mary's A Grand Old Name/Harrigan/45 Minutes From Broadway/When We Are M-A-Double-R-I-E-D/(unknown march).
