Golden Tone
was an mid-1960s subsidiary of Precision Radiation Instruments (PRI), Incorporated, the company that
owned the Tops label. Golden Tone was used primarily as a reissue label for previously released
material on the Tops label, usually in abridged form by deleting some songs. Golden Tone later was
used to reissue albums on the Acorn and Evon labels, two of Rondo's subsidiaries that P.R.I. acquired in
the early 1960s. Golden Tone was a budget label in every (negative) sense of that word. The word
"cheap" comes to mind, as everything seemed to be recycled, including the vinyl, the cover photos, and
even the record jackets! Photo at right shows a multiple recycling job: The photo of the Artie Shaw LP
was recycled from an earlier unrelated Tops album (Tops L-1569), the music recycled from an earlier
Tops release (1755/9755) and the record jacket was recycled from an Ultraphonic/Golden Tone
Christmas reissue (51500) for which they apparently had excess jackets and just pasted the new slick
over the old. Add in the recycled vinyl and, well, you get the picture.
The original series on Golden Tone was the C4000 (mono)/14000 (stereo) series, but later Golden Tone,
Mayfair, Rondo, and perhaps other labels reissued the Tops albums on their own label with the same
Tops catalog numbers, so Golden Tone albums can be found in the 9500 series, for example.
The Golden Tone label was black with silver print, with a silver band around the edge of the label and
the label name on two lines within a shield at the top of the band. Some early mono issues were pressed
with "High Fidelity" in the shield on top instead of "Golden Tone," making the label name ambiguous at
best.

C 4000/14000 Series:
| |
Note: GoldenTone C4001 was actually a series of records, each called America's Top Tunes, packaged in a generic cover with a circular opening so the record titles could be seen. The records themselves were numbered C4001-x1, C4001-x2, etc. (where "x" is the side of the record, either "A" or "B"). For convenience, we have omitted the record side designation from the listings below. We have located the following records in the 4001 series, but there were obviously others, since the numbers we have seen go to 14 at least. These were compilations of the singles put out on the Tops label. | |
