Adam VIII, Ltd. Album Discography
by Mike Callahan and David Edwards

Adam VIII was Roulette's telemarketing label. Adam VIII started in 1973 and was named for Morris Levy's son. The label put out a series of albums throughout the 1970s to compete with K-tel and Ronco, who were the "big names" in telemarketing at the time.

Adam VIII's most notorious moment came when they issued an album by John Lennon called John Lennon Sings the Great Rock & Roll Hits (Roots). An interesting commentary on that album is found in the book All Together Now: The First Complete Beatles Discography 1961-1975 by Harry Castleman and Walter J. Podrazik [Ballantine Books, New York, 1976, page 270]. They say:

The complete story behind this briefly-available album is clouded in legal briefs. Some of it is easy to explain. Fact: Morris Levy, owner of the publishing rights to Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me," claimed that Lennon copied some lines from that song in "Come Together." [The lines in question are Berry's, "Here comes a flat-top, he comes cruisin' up with me." as opposed to Lennon's "Here come old flat-top, he comes groovin' up slowly."] Fact: Partially to avoid suit, John recorded seven or eight oldies, including "You Can't Catch Me," under Phil Spector's direction in October, 1973. Fact: Spector took the master tapes and Lennon had some "difficulty" getting them back. Fact: Lennon eventually rejected all but four of the old tracks and cut ten new ones in October, 1974. Fact: Lennon presented Levy with an unpolished version of the album in late 1974. Fact: In early February, 1975, ads began appearing on television promoting a mail-order album whose cover contained the specific statement that John Lennon and Apple records had authorized the enterprise. Fact: Both Lennon and Apple Records denied that statement and rush released their own copy of the album, originally scheduled for April. Fact: Very soon thereafter, Adam VIII, Ltd. stopped answering its phones and ceased distribution of the album."

Adam VIII may have temporarily stopped answering phones, but not for long, as this didn't seem to make much of a dent in owner Morris Levy's hubris. As the story goes, Lennon, in order to avoid a court suit, agreed to record three songs for which Levy owned the publishing rights (a very lucrative deal, since Lennon's records were selling zillions). During their conversations, it was alleged that they spoke of the possibility of a TV offer for the album, but Lennon needed to get Apple's approval, which Apple was not inclined to do. Levy claimed that the deal was made verbally and published the album anyway using the rough mixes [released February 7, 1975, according to court papers], then had to withdraw it. Capitol got their version, titled Rock'N'Roll, out by February 17. Eventually, Levy had to pay some amount to Lennon/Apple (said to be about $78,000) primarily because Apple had to lower the price of its own release of the album to compete with the inexpensive Adam VIII version. This was hardly catastrophic for Morris Levy. According to court documents, the Adam VIII disc sold 1270 LPs and 175 8-track copies, so it is indeed rare and collectible today, so much so that it has been counterfeited.

The Adam VIII name was discontinued when Levy sold the Roulette label to Rhino Records in June, 1989. More recently, bootleggers have been using the Adam VIII logo for all kinds of unauthorized CDs.

The jackets of the records tended toward heavy posterboard-like material, as opposed to the more common heavy cardboard. Misspellings on the covers and labels were common, and some fold-open jackets were completely blank inside. Since the albums were being sold through TV ads and not in stores, there was no particular reason to go to extravagant jacket designs to catch a potential customer's eye. You got what you got, even if sometimes it was a pasteboard sleeve with "Another Hit From Adam VIII" on it and a hole in the center where you could read the label.

Labels on Adam VIII were issued in various colors, many of them illustrated here.
Different discs in multi-disc sets would typically have different label colors. Sometimes single-disc albums would be issued using different color labels on each side.
Adam VIII used several shades of grey, such as dark grey (far left), light grey (middle left), and even silver (near left).
Before about 1977, the print was in black, but after that they went to different label/print color combinations for some albums. Later albums reverted to black print.
