RSO was first distributed by Atlantic from 1973 to 1975, and used the "SO" prefix in their various series. The label is pale orange (or tan) with black lettering; "RSO" is written in white lettering in a red cow on the top half of the label. During the Atlantic years, the following text is written in the form of an arc at the bottom of the label: "DIST. BY ATLANTIC RECORDING CORP., 1841 BROADWAY, N.Y., N.Y." (800 & 8800 series) or "DIST. BY ATLANTIC RECORDING CORP., 75 ROCKEFELLER PLAZA, N.Y., N.Y." (4800 series). Promotional labels for the Atlantic or Polydor years were white with black print (near left).
PolyGram distributed RSO from the start of 1976 until the label was absorbed into PolyGram in 1984. The labels were similar in design to the Atlantic-distributed version, but with different wording around the bottom edge of the label. Up until 1978, this was "MANUFACTURED AND MARKETED BY POLYDOR 810 SEVENTH AVE./N.Y., N.Y. 10019." Starting in 1978, it changed to "MANUFACTURED & MARKETED BY RSO RECORDS, INC. 8335 SUNSET BLVD., LOS ANGELES, CA 90069". Label color varied from tan (far left) to a pale yellow (near left).
Almost all the labels were the standard RSO labels as above, but at least for one album, custom labels were used.
Custom labels for The Bee Gees Greatest, RS 2-4200.
Near the end of 1981, the RSO label was redesigned to a silver color (far left). The Canadian RSO label (near left) looked similar to the US version, but with considerably more fine print around the bottom edge. |
