Stax Album Discography, Part 1 (1962-1968): The Atlantic Years
by David Edwards and Mike Callahan
Last update: October 20, 1999

The first Stax label was light blue with black printing. "STAX" in black above the center hole, above the logo is a stack of records. This label was used on all monaural records in the 700 series. At the same time the blue label was used for monaural, a yellow label with black printing was used for stereo issues. The graphics are identical. The 700 series was also issued with white labels as promotional records in monaural only.

The 700 series was issued in both monaural and stereo (or rechanneled stereo) with a few exceptions. In the following discography, all issues that were in stereo or rechanneled stereo are listed with a "S" in front of the number. All those not listed with an S were issued in monaural only. The 700 series was distributed by Atlantic Records. Actually, several of these stereo albums are now sought after as collectors' items, since when Atlantic started reissuing the Stax masters on the Atlantic label, much of the stereo disappeared (Hmmmm. Still happening today!). In particular, Carla Thomas' "B-A-B-Y" was stereo on the original Stax albums, but hasn't been heard that way since.

We would appreciate any additions or corrections to this discography. Just send them to us via e-mail. Both Sides Now Publications is an information web page. We are not a catalog, nor can we provide the records listed below. We have no association with Stax Records or associated labels. Stax is currently owned by Fantasy Records. Should you want to contact Fantasy, or should you be interested in acquiring albums listed in this discography (which are all out of print), we suggest you see our Frequently Asked Questions page and follow the instructions found there.
