Compact-33 Little LPs (Juke Box EPs): Mercury

By Mike Callahan, Tim Neely, Dave Edwards, Patrice Eyries, Randy Watts, and Thomas Reed
Last update: November 17, 2015

Mercury was one of the first labels to put out Little LPs, putting out Little LPs within a month of the Cadence innovation. Interestingly, although Mercury called these Little LPs "Compact 6" discs, not all of them had six songs.

We would appreciate any additions or corrections to this discography. Just send them to us via e-mail. Both Sides Now Publications is an information web page. We are not a catalog, nor can we provide the records listed below. We have no association with any of these record labels. Mercury

The Mercury Little LP series started as a mono-only series, with a black label with silver print. These first Little LPs were released in November, 1961, and are the ones the success of which the Mercury executive referred to as "Bombsville." Mercury released ten of these at that time, then abandoned the series. These were packaged in a plastic sleeve with a snap on the top, with a thin cardboard sheet inside with a photo on the front and bio info and promotion of full albums by the artist on the back. The songs were usually taken from multiple albums.

Almost a year later, when Seeburg approached Mercury about putting out stereo Little LPs, Mercury revived the series, this time in stereo, starting with the next catalog number from where they left off. They reissued the first mono Little LP in stereo at that time. These stereo Little LPs had blue labels with silver print. The songs for the stereo Little LPs were usually taken from a single album.
