Strand was a New York label that started as a full-priced label distributed by Decca, but soon began
specializing in budget issues. They were originally located, in 1959, at 680 Fifth Avenue in New York, but
by 1960 had moved to 157 West 57th Street, New York. The vinyl tended toward thick and cheap, with
many imperfections. Much of the label's output -- but not all -- was "bargain bin filler." As with many of
the other budget labels, the philosophy seemed to be "anything to sell records," and if that meant
misleading the buying public, so be it. If that also meant using the tried-and-true industry practice of not
paying artists - - or not even telling them their record had been released, then that worked, too. There
are plenty of examples below, including putting out a Virtues album titled Guitar Boogie Shuffle,
the name of their hit, when the song was not even on the album!
There were a couple of other notable albums, particularly the albums by Larry Hall and a couple of Chris
Columbo albums with the minor hit "Summertime," but most of the output was typical bargain-bin dross.
They did issue albums with some "name" artists like Bobby Rydell, Brook Benton, Ray Charles, Ivory
Joe Hunter, Memphis Slim, and others, but these were typically tracks recorded early in the artists'
career, not examples of their current work. Artists like Don Cherry, Texas Jim Robertson, Joe Zawinul,
and Karen Chandler had some hits during their careers, but the Strand albums were not those hits.
Journeymen like Billy Mure and Specs Powell added name recognition.
Eventually, the label moved to 905 N. Broad Street in Philadelphia, near their demise around 1965.
Stereo was sporadic, even though almost all the Strand albums were issued in "stereo." The stereo albums used the "SLS-" prefix, while for mono albums, the prefix was "SL-." For most of Strand's life, the label was orange with black print, with "STRAND" at the top. Near the end of the label's days, approximately corresponding to the move to Philadelphia, the label changed to a light blue with dark blue print, with the same design. Strand also used the blue label for later reissues of earlier albums whose original label was orange. |

SL/SLS-1027 - Specs Powell Presents Big Band Jazz - Specs Powell [1961] A note from
Herman M. Kuhlmann: "That album came through my shop many years ago. Recognizing some very
good musicianship and driving big band jazz, I tried to chase Specs Powell down to find out who was
playing on his record gig. Calling local 802 in New York, I was told that Specs had moved to LA. After
numerous calls to California (from Seattle my town) I finally found Specs, and when I told him about the
record, he broke into a laughing jag. It turns out that the band was a German band that a Strand exec
had heard and obtained some of their tapes while on vacation and decided to publish an LP. Apparently
Specs, as an accomplished drummer, had been used by this fellow in past recording sessions. The
producer said that he'd put Specs as the "presenter" on the record label. Specs jokingly complained that
he never made a dime off that endorsement. Further, nobody knew the names of any of the
performers." Tracks: Avalon/Jimmy's Blues/Autumn Leaves/Skin Riff/Gammes/Theme For Four

Note: At approximately this point, label changes from orange to blue-grey. Several of the last few albums before this are also known to be pressed with the blue label. This could be because (a) the blue labels are later pressings, or (b) because the label change actually occurred several albums before this point and existing orange label stock was being used up at certain pressing plants for, say, the Chuck Jackson LP above, or (c) album 1125 may actually have been pressed earlier than 1124. We do not know for sure. The albums below have blue labels and we have not seen orange labels for them. | |

SL/SLS-1128 - The Breakfast Hill Trio Salutes the Kingston Trio - Breakfast Hill Trio
[1965] This is one of those cheapie LPs that record labels use to try to mislead the potential buyers. The
cover has "The Kingston Trio" in huge letters, but when one looks closely, in small print is "The
Breakfast Hill Trio Salutes...". That said, the renditions are pretty good for the most part, with good
instrumental talent, but voices not as strong as the KT. The liner notes fail to identify the members of the
group, but we have received information from a member of the group that The Breakfast Hill Trio was
Dick Barron, Dick Clark, and Nick DeAlesandro, from New Hampshire. Although no songwriters are
identified in the liner notes, two of the songs ("I'm Coming Home" and "Song of Hope") are originals
written by Dick Clark. As is often true with discs issued as a record label is on its last legs, our copy of
this is a quality control disaster, with surface noise on a record that looks unplayed, a stereo disc in a
mono jacket and label, and pressed slightly off-center. And as far as misleading people, Strand also
apparently neglected to tell the group that this record was even issued, and they didn't find out for 35
years! (Did I mention they didn't get paid for this? Nah, probably redundant anyway.) M.T.A. (S)/Scotch
And Soda (S)/Wabash Cannonball (S)/All My Sorrows (S)/I'm Comin' Home
(S)/Jamaica Farewell (S)//Tijuana Jail (S)/Greenback Dollar (S)/Green Grow The Laurels (S)/Annabelle
Lee (S)/Song Of Hope (S)/California (S)
