Judd Album Discography

The Judd label was owned by Sam Phillips' brother Judd Phillips. The label was established in Sheffield, Alabama, in 1958, and continued operations until 1961. By 1960, they were located at 1154 Hermitage in Florence, Alabama.

The Judd label was distributed by NRC of Atlanta, Georgia, starting about October, 1959. They issued a total of 22 singles. Their first success was "Matilda" by Cookie and His Cupcakes [Judd 1002], which reached #47 on the national charts after its release around the beginning of 1959. About a year later, Ray Smith's "Rockin' Little Angel" [Judd 1016], reached #22, but the follow-up, "Put Your Arms Around Me Honey" [Judd 1017], only reached #91. They issued one album to our knowledge, the Ray Smith album, and that was apparently issued in mono only.

The last single released on the label is of some collector interest, since it was the original version of "Sheila" by Tommy Roe [Judd 1022]. Roe re-recorded the song some time later for ABC-Paramount [10329] and it reached #1 in the summer of 1962. Other than Cookie & His Cupcakes, Ray Smith, and Tommy Roe, the Judd roster is made up largely of unknowns: Bobby Denton, Lee Harrison, Ronnie Malone, the Creels, Mark Taylor, Carlo & the Cupids, Morris Simmons, Kaye Golden, Pee Wee Maddux, Roland James, the Escorts, and June Alexander.

The Judd label was purple with silver print, "JUDD" above the center hole in alternating white and purple rays. To the left of the center hole was "NRC", the distributor's name.
