Musicor Album Discography, Part 6:
Budget Subsidiaries: MusicVoice &
Music Disc/MusicO

By Mike Callahan, Dave Edwards, and Patrice Eyries
Last update: November 23, 2006

Musicor Records apparently had several different budget subsidiaries. Their main subsidiary started life as "Music Disc Records," and changed to "MusicO Records," apparently also pronounced "music disc." The other subsidiary is rather more obscure. "MusicVoice Records" reissued some of the Musicor medley albums, but apparently not the stars like Gene Pitney, George Jones, and the Platters.

MUSICOR ALBUM DISCOGRAPHY, PART 6

THE MUSICVOICE LABEL

The MusicVoice label was started by Art Talmadge about the time he bought into Musicor. It started as a singles label in 1964, and for a short time became a budget subsidiary. MusicVoice issued four singles, numbered 501-504. The third single, #503, was reissued as Musicor 1105, by Ronnie Dante, "If You Love Me Laurie"/"Don't Stand Up In The Canoe." MusicVoice #504 was by the Intruders ("Jack Be Nimble"/"But You Belong To Me"), but it is doubtful that this is the same group that had hits later.

Only a few albums are known, and they are listed below. The record cover artwork was the same as the Musicor albums, but the numbers were derived by blanking out the "Musicor MS 3" and leaving the last three digits, e.g., Musicor MS 3012 became MusicVoice MVS 012. Many of these were also issued on reel-to-reel tapes on the MusicTapes label, which had the musicor logo on the front of the box. It is possible that MusicVoice and MusicTapes were the same entity.

The record album cover logo was quite similar to the oval Musicor logo, while the logo on the 45s and album labels resembled the early Musicor logo and Musicor label logo. The MusicVoice label was dark blue with silver print.

THE MUSIC DISC/MUSICO LABEL

The Music Disc label was a budget label run out of Skokie, Illinois, a subsidiary of Musicor Records, based in New York City.

The Music Disc logo had a small record disc that resembled a capital "O" between the words "Music" and "Disc," making the label name resemble "Music O Disc." The first dozen or so albums, all issued simultaneously, had the blue "Music Disc" label. Perhaps thinking that "Music O Disc" with a disc in the middle was redundant (Music Disc Disc?), or perhaps because the name was previously used by another company, the label name was shortened to MusicO by deleting the word "Disc" at the end of the label name. Although the new label name actually is the word "Music" with the small disc after it, so the label is "Music Disc," the result was that the label is now usually called "Musico," very close to Musicor, their parent company and from whose catalog most of their albums were drawn.

Most of the known Music Disc/MusicO albums were compilations taken from various Musicor albums, although very few were straight reissues. Cover art tended toward "tear and paste" adaptation from the Musicor album art for the first dozen or so albums, where faces would be torn from the color artwork and pasted into a collage. Albums typically had ten songs, and many of the early album covers also had the phrase "10 Big Hits" besides the title and artist.

The first Music Disc label is light blue with a dark blue logo running from left to right across the center hole, with the logo's disc in the center hole of the label.
With the change from "Music O Disc" to MusicO, the label first changed to orange with black print.
Later, the label changed to a very basic black with silver print.
