Vee-Jay Album Discography, Part 8:
Vee-Jay International, Part 2 (New Issues)

VEE-JAY II (1972-1978, continued)

Vee Jay International was the second Vee-Jay entity. Their story is on the Vee-Jay International Story page.

100 Hall of Fame Oldies box
In 1972, Vee-Jay used telemarketing to put out a five-LP set of various-artists albums taken from the Vee-Jay and Mira/Mirwood masters, along with some "trade-outs" from other labels (trade-outs are songs licensed to other labels in exchange for licenses for songs from their label.). The albums showed up in a brown cardboard wrapper with no album jackets. The return address for these albums was "International Exchange, Record Division, 3028 Santa Fe Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90810. Like other telemarketers of the time (e.g., Tele-House, K-tel, etc.), the different albums had different color labels. The first three of these albums became the first three albums of the 20 Soulful Oldies series issued the following year, so those volumes of 20 Soulful Oldies have a 1972 production date even though they were issued in 1973.

The first new series to come out of Vee-Jay since the bankruptcy was the 20 Soulful Oldies Series on the red Vee-Jay "Vintage Series" label. The cover graphics were taken from the Oldies-33 label album Soulful Oldies, and the label graphics were taken from the original maroon "script" label. The first three issues of 20 Soulful Oldies, which were exactly the same as the first three discs in the 100 Hall of Fame Hits issued in 1972, and were numbered VJVS-1001 to 1003. These had matrix numbers 72-1000 to 72-1005 for the six different sides. When the 20 Soulful Oldies series was issued the next year the next year, the matrix numbers for Volumes 4-6 were used as the album numbers, with the VJVS- (Vee-Jay Vintage Series) prefixes, therefore they started at 1006, with each album having two record numbers, one corresponding to each side of the LP. The albums were issued with deep red labels, except for Volume 2, which had a pink label with the same graphics. All had the same cover graphics, with the volumes and the song titles being the only differences.

25th Anniversary Catalog By 1974, they began to reissue albums more frequently. The schedule was rather ambitious; perhaps the high point was a souvenir catalog (photo at right) put out in 1978 as part of the 25th anniversary celebration, which promised literally hundreds of albums, both new and reissues. It was not to be. Constant financial and distribution problems left the company in a weak state, eventually limited to once again leasing their masters to other labels in the 1980s.

This section covers all the new issues that Vee-Jay International released between 1972 and 1978, except for the jazz and gospel new releases, which are on those pages, and the Epitaph and Dynasty labels, which were subsidiaries of Vee-Jay International in the mid-1970s. Clicking on the appropriate link will take you there.

The first label Vee-Jay International used for its new series was the red "script" label (far left), which it used for most of the volumes in the 20 Soulful Oldies series. The same label was used also for reissues starting about 1973. Later, about 1975 or so, a new orange Vee-Jay International label (near left), with the globe logo, was used for both new issues and reissues in the pop series.

The Vee-Jay International "World of Jazz" series used a blue label with the globe logo (far left), while the gospel series (near left) used a purple label with the globe logo.

20 Soulful Oldies, Volume II had some problems at the printers, apparently. One side was a dark pink instead of red, while the other was light pink.

The Graffiti Gold album used a gold label with the brackets logo (far left), while several of the albums on the 7300 series were actually on the Dynasty label, which used a blue label with gold print (near left).
