Star Song Album DiscographyStar Song Communications, and its Star Song label, was founded in 1974 in the Houston area by
Darrell A. Harris. From the start, it was a Christian music label specializing in Christian folk, pop, and
rock, much like the Waco-based Myrrh, but unlike the older Word label, which was heavily into traditional
hymns and such. Harris' philosophy was to merge "artistry with ministry." Unlike a lot of labels that have
artists who come and go like through a revolving door, most of the Star Song artists tended to stick with
the label for many years. Harris was frequently listed as a producer/executive producer until the label
was sold to EMI in 1994.
In the early days, Star Song was located at 910 E. Harris, Pasadena, Texas, a suburb of Houston.
By 1982, Star Song had moved to 2223 Strawberry in Pasadena, and by 1986, moved into
Houston proper at 12929 Gulf Freeway, Suite 201, Houston, TX. During all this time, it was listed
as a Division of Jubilee Communications on the record albums.
The first LP issued on Star Song was the Tom Autry album, recorded in 1974, but with a 1975 release
date. Early artist signings included Autry, Jim Gill, and Fletch Wiley. Star Song also issued a couple of
leased albums, one by Arkangel and another a compilation by Glass Harp. Also signed in the late 1970s
were Pam Mark Hall (who would later move to Reunion Records), Randy Adams, Craig Smith, and a
couple of bands who would later bring hard rock to Christian music: The Resurrection Band (later called
simply "Rez"), and Petra.
Petra would prove to be the label's biggest selling, and longest lasting, act. Steve & Annie Chapman,
formerly in the 1970s Contemporary Christian group Dogwood, had a number of albums on Star Song,
and currently run their own S&A Family label. Other successful artists with multiple albums included
husband-and-wife team Bob and Jayne Farrell (as Farrell & Farrell), Don Francisco, Twila Paris, White
Heart, Whitecross, the Imperials, the Newsboys (an Australian Christian rock band), and Mylon (Lefevre)
& Broken Heart. Star Song even had a few albums out by the prolific singer/songwriter/musicians Bill &
Gloria Gaither, along with their son Benjamin's band.
Early Star Song issues (1975-1983) were distributed by Benson Records, using the SSR-0001 series.
When Star Song switched to Word for distribution in 1983, the catalog numbering system was changed,
using Word's SPCN system for catalog numbers. The SPCN system was the numbering system that
Word used to distribute albums to Christian book stores. At that point, around SSR-050, Star Song's
catalog numbers switched from the 0001 series to the 2000 series (although SSR-052 had already
been issued). Those back catalog albums still in print were renumbered to the new SPCN system. The
distribution deal with Word lasted about four years. During this time, Word inked a deal with the secular
A&M record label to issue some of Word's product in the secular market on A&M. Several Petra albums
were also issued on A&M during this time.
About 1987, Star Song's distribution again changed, moving to Tempo Records (located at 1900 West
47th Place, Mission, Kansas 66205). Tempo simplified the numbering system, changing it to the
SSR-8000 series, using the same running sequence started in 1974 and continuing through the 2000
series. This allowed the Star Song catalog to have continuous numbering for their albums from 1
forward, despite the distribution changes. Tempo reissued many of the Star Song back catalog albums
with the new SSR-8000 designations (for example, SSR- 0013 was reissued as SSR-8013, etc.)
In 1989, Star Song moved from Houston to Nashville, but business continued pretty much as usual,
except for the notation about "Jubilee Communications" being dropped from the record jackets. In
1993, Star Song again changed catalog numbering sequences, first to the SSD-8800 series, then to the
SSD-1000 series.
In 1994, the label was sold to EMI, and the catalog numbering sequence started over with SSD-0001
under the distribution of Chordant Distribution, the arm of EMI that dealt with Christian music labels. In
1996, Star Song was moved to join Sparrow Records, another of EMI's Christian labels, in the Sparrow
Records building. At that point, it became entangled with Sparrow, rather than operating as an
independent label. By 1998, barely two years later, EMI announced that Star Song would henceforth be
an imprint used only for special projects. Since that time, the CDs issued have been mostly compilations
of back catalog material.
