Duke Album Discography

The first Duke label (far left), used for 10-inch LPs, was yellow and purple. The bottom ⅔ of label was yellow, while the top ⅓ was purple with "DUKE" above the center hole in yellow on purple. Printing is purple. There was a large yellow "V: under the label name and a purple horshoe-like band around the bottom ¾ of the label. Early EP releases (EP-80 and EP-81) used a similar label (near left).
The first 12-inch LP label (far left) was like the 10-inch LP label above. This was used until 1961, when it changed to an orange label (near left). This second LP label was orange, blending to yellow around the center hole. Printing was in black, with DUKE in stylized block letters above the center hole in white.
When Duke was taken over by ABC Records, the label switched to green (far left), with DUKE in yellow above the center hole. A top hat was to the left of the Duke logo and white gloves to the right. "Distributed by ABC/Dunhill Records" appeared at the bottom of the label. ABC also used their generic yellow/orange/purple label (near left) that was a staple for all ABC-related labels.

Duke issued several stereo albums, but the earliest of these was rechanneled. The original issue of The Best of Bobby Bland [Duke DLPS-84] featured some true stereo, but the reissue on ABC [DLPX-84] is all mono. Albums known to have been issued in stereo have the "DLPS-" prefix; the "DLP-" prefix alone indicates the LP was originally mono only.

Duke issued two EPs in 1955 by Johnny Ace, a Duke star who was killed playing Russian Roulette. These were numbered EP-80 and EP-81. When those numbers came around in the LP series, they were not released as LPs to avoid confusion.
