Dunhill Album Discography

The Dunhill label started in 1965 and lasted until 1975. The story of the label can be found on The Dunhill Story page.

Albums issued up to DS-50030 were issued in both mono and stereo. Mono releases had a "D" prefix while the stereo used "DS." Those albums issued in mono and stereo are noted in the discography below with a "D/DS" prefix. Because virtually all the tracks on all the albums on Dunhill were true stereo on the stereo albums, stereo designations are not used for this discography. With the exceptions noted above, songs on stereo albums can be assumed to be stereo.

The first Dunhill label was black with silver print, with "Dunhill" in a yellow frame on top and "DIST. BY ABC-PARAMOUNT RECORDS, INC. MADE IN U.S.A." around the bottom of the label in white print. Original labels are on a shiny paper stock, while some reissues used a flat stock. Promotional labels initially were very plain in design, but eventually used the same design. Promotional labels were white with black print.


When Adler sold the label to ABC, before about 50025 or so, the logo on the front of the album was changed, with the ABC logo added in front of the basic Dunhill "arch." This was a transitional logo that only lasted a short time before it was changed to the multi-colored box logo which started about 50029. After the sale to ABC, the notation at the bottom of the label was changed to, "A SUBSIDIARY OF ABC-PARAMOUNT RECORDS" then "A SUBSIDIARY OF ABC RECORDS, INC. - N.Y., N.Y. - Made in U.S.A."







This first label design was used up to about 50030, but was used until much later for Capitol Record Club issues. In fact, he original Dunhill "arch" label was used by CRC literally for years after it had been replaced by the multi-color box design by the label proper, giving us oddities like 50100 in 1970 having a label that was discarded at 50031, in 1968, incredibly still with the first "distributed by ABC- Paramount" statement on the bottom! Even more interesting, Steely Dan's original LP, issued on the ABC label, ended up with a Dunhill label in it's Capitol Record Club incarnation! The promotional version of this first label was used until stock ran out (the promotional label for 50033 is known to have the first style).

The second label is black with "Dunhill" and "ABC Records" in a multi-colored box on top. The box has three compartments, one for the "Dunhill" logo that was used on the previous label, one for the well-known circle "abc" logo, and one beneath the ABC logo for "RECORDS." Written in white lettering around the bottom of the label is "Dunhill Records, Inc. is a subsidiary and trademark licensee of ABC Records, Inc. New York, N.Y. 10019-Made in U.S.A." There might be slight variations on the words at the bottom of the label. Promotional labels of this design were white with black print, although promotional labels using the old design were used until stock was depleted.

At DS 50067, a slight change in the label design separates the "Dunhill" and "ABC Records" parts of the multicolored box at the top of the label into two separate boxes. The logo on the front of the record jacket also changes to two boxes. The notation at the bottom of the record label remains the same. Promotional labels use the "one box" design, supposedly until supplies are used up, but we have not seen a counterpart to the "two box" label, so apparently supplies of the old labels were never used up (promotional albums as late as 50134 are known to exist with the "one box" design, and this is just before the "blocks" label was introduced).

At about DS 50137, a short-lived new label design is used concurrently with the previous one. It is black with "Dunhill" written in multi-colored children's blocks on top and "ABC Records" at the bottom. This was an experiment by ABC, as the parent ABC label was revised to use the children's blocks as well. Promotional labels were of the same design in white with black printing. Apparently, it was not greeted with enthusiasm, as it lasted mere months. After the "blocks" label was junked, Dunhill reverted to the multi-colored box label, but without the white printing on the bottom edge. Specially designed labels appear as well (i.e. Three Dog Night's Hard Labor ) .

Starting at about DS 50170, the blocks label was discarded and albums from this point on were issued using various labels. The normal "two box" label was used, as was the "one box" label, as was the regular new ABC label stock (yellow to red or purple concentric circles, with "abc Dunhill" underlined on top). Things were winding down at Dunhill, however, and by 1975, ABC reissued many of the older Dunhill albums that were still in the catalog using the ABC label. When ABC was sold to MCA in the late 1970s, MCA continued this practice, using the ABC- Dunhill version of the "concentric circles" label for reissues, even though the jackets were changed to show MCA numbers..

The tracks on the albums in the discography below are given in the order they appear, except for albums marked with an asterisk (*), where the tracks are listed alphabetically because we are unaware of the correct sequence. Release dates were estimated from the actual date of label copy, which is usually a few weeks prior to release, and verified by chart entry dates, which are usually a few weeks after release. Label copy dates were provided by Bill Daniels from ABC-Dunhill files.


...and one last thing. The Dunhill label out of Malaysia, which reissued WB and Island albums in the 1970s, has apparently no connection with Lou Adler's Dunhill label. Neither did Dunhill Compact Classics, the now-defunct compact disc label that later changed their name to DCC.

D/DS 50006 - If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears - The Mama's & The Papa's [2/66] (3-66, #1) Note: for this album only, the group's name was spelled with an apostrophe before the "s" in "Mamas" and "Papas." Subsequent albums opted for grammatical correctness and dropped the apostrophes. There are three different covers for this record. The original cover picture taken in a bathroom showed a toilet in the lower right corner. This offensive (?) cover was withdrawn quickly and replaced with one that has a printed banner covering the toilet which says "Includes California Dreaming". The third cover has a large black border around the cover, with the picture of the Mama's and Papa's cropped so that the bathroom doesn't show; this cover may be a record club release only. DS 50046 - Wings - Wings [11/68] A note from Sharon Bach: "I am the widow of Oz Bach who formed the group Wings. Oz was the bass player for Spanky and Our Gang. Oz told me they were being groomed at the same time as Steppenwolf and 3 Dog Night, but two of the guys in Wings did not want to tour to promote the album. Because of this, the VP pulled the promotional bucks. I never did learn the whole story and I don't know which two guys. Chances are, Oz wanted to convert some "session rats" but they preferred the comfort of the studio. Again, I really don't know! I never pushed him for info because it was a bit painful they lost their moment. The album is very nice. An interesting side note: Paul McCartney had to buy the rights to the name "Wings" from Oz. Oz said he was "a nice guy." I'll never know why Oz didn't just replace the two guys that didn't want to tour." DSD 50198 - Dog Style - Three Dog Night [cancelled] This album appears to be an urban legend. Although we have seen it listed, along with release and deletion dates [allegedly released 9/20/74 and deleted 4/30/75, but this seems to be disinformation], and a listing for a quad version, we have never seen a copy of the promo or commercial album. Apparently, test pressings exist of a 12- track album with this title and number, but the album was cancelled at that stage. It was later issued as a 10-track LP as Coming Down Your Way [ABC ABCD-888] in 1975. Tracks on the test pressing are: Coming Down Your Way/You Can Leave Your Hat On/Good Old Feeling/When It's Over/Lean Back Hold Steady/Til The World Ends/Mind Over Matter/Midnight Rider ("Eli Wheeler")/Yo Te Quiero Hablar (Take You Down)/This Is Your Captain Calling/Save Our Ship. The final two tracks were left off the 1975 version, which had a different track order.
