T-Neck was formed by The Isley Brothers (Rudolph, Ronald & O'Kelly) after they left Motown,
presumably over disagreement about production. The name of the label comes from their hometown of
Teaneck, New Jersey. Their leaving Motown was fairly predictable, as they had recorded for more than a
half-dozen labels since the mid-1950s, and never stayed long with any of them. By starting their own
label, they apparently subscribed to the philosophy, "If you want it done right, do it yourself."
The move from Motown proved to be successful. They scored instantly with the anthemic "It's Your
Thing," the first hit record of a very successful label. Mostly, T-Neck proved to be a vehicle for the
brothers' recorded works, with few other artists. The distribution was first managed by Buddah Records,
but in 1973, T-Neck switch its distribution to Epic and the label kept on releasing records until the mid
1980s.
The first label was orange with black lettering, with "T NECK" written in white capital letters in a large
blue T with blue sidelines at the top of the label. The following text was written in the form of an arc at
the bottom of the label: "EXCLUSIVELY DISTRIBUTED BY BUDDAH RECORDS - 1650 BROADWAY
N.Y.C." with a small Buddah logo (i.e. the famous " Shiva " statue) in between the words "Buddah" and
"Records". The orange color changed slightly (faded orange) over the years, like the text at the bottom
of the label, with the address moving to "810 7TH AVE. N.Y.C. 10019".
When the distribution switched to Epic/Columbia, the label changed as well, to a plain and unimaginative
orange one with "TNECK" written in white capital letters at the top of the label. Promotional albums for
the Epic-distributed albums were plain white with black print.
All releases were stereo only. The track listing below is given in playing sequence whenever this
information was available. The songs on the albums whose catalog numbers are marked with an

CBS consolidated series (Distributed by CBS):
In 1973, as distribution switches to Epic/Columbia, the CBS catalog numbering policy is used. This
numbering system included all the CBS and CBS-distributed labels in one numbering sequence,
regardless of label. It began with 30000 in 1970, and used various prefixes to denote the labels
(CK=Columbia, EK=Epic, etc.) This explains why the T-Neck numbers are discontinuous. CBS-
distributed labels were initially given the prefix ZK, and the letter Q within the prefix means
Quadrophonic. Later, the ZK prefix was changed to PZ, and both new issues and reissues of KZ catalog
numbers used the prefix PZ. CBS also used other prefixes for their distributed labels, such as JZ or FZ
at various times. These usually indicated pricing.
