Millenium was Jimmy Ienner's label, although in some ways it was more like two labels than one.
Ienner was one of the best known producers in the pop music business, having produced hit records for
Three Dog Night, Grand Funk, The Raspberries, Eric Carmen, Lighthouse, and many others. He also
was the producer of the hit compilation Dirty Dancing. He was well liked by the artists and gave
many helpful suggestions for their sound and for their careers.
Millennium was distributed by Casablanca in 1977 and 1978. When Ienner decided to break his ties
with Casablanca at the end of 1978, this was not a minor thing. Apparently, his artists were signed to
Casablanca, not Millennium, so all of his artists' contracts transferred to Casablanca. Casablanca
reissued the last three (i.e., then-current) Millenium albums on Casablanca and issued future albums by
the former Millennium artists. A few months later, Ienner started over with a new cast of characters and a
new distribution label, RCA.
As far as the label design went, the distribution change had minimal impact. The label kept the same
design, but the background color changed from grey to blue.
Hit artists on the label while distributed by Casablanca included Meco, Godz, and Brooklyn Dreams,
while after the distribution switch were Chilliwack, Bruce Cockburn, Franke and the Knockouts, Don
McLean, Yipes!, and Tommy James.
The Casablanca-distributed label, shown at far left, is grey and depicts a foggy sea and sky scenery with an orange setting sun. It had black lettering. The logo "Millenium" was written in silver lettering on the top half of the label. Around the bottom of the label it read, "Manufactured and Distributed by Casablanca Record and FilmWorks, Inc., 8255 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90046." When the distribution switched to RCA (shown near left), the label color changed to blue with the following written around the bottom of the label: "Manufactured and Distributed by RCA Records, New York, N.Y." For the RCA-distributed albums, Jimmy Ienner's smile logo was also added inside the sun. |
