The first Columbia Lp label (far left) was dark red with gold print. The "COLUMBIA" name was at the top of the label in block letters, bending around the edge. There was a thin gold circle concentric with the center hole and about a half-inch in from the label edge. Around the bottom edge of the label was the Columbia note-and-microphone logo, as well as the Lp logo. Between these logos it read "LONG PLAYING MICROGROOVE" on two lines. At the very bottom of the label in fine print was trade mark information. This label was used in 1948 for about the first few dozen issues. It was replaced by the second label (near left), which was similar except for the bottom. Along the bottom edge it read, "LONG PLAYING MICROGROOVE" with the LP logo between "playing" and "microgroove". At the very bottom of the label, bending around the edge, was fine print which read, "Trade Marks Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. Marcas Registradas Made in U.S.A. Pats Pending". The Columbia logo was now much smaller and located within the circle, at the bottom. | ||
Most or all of the first 50 albums in the CL-6000 series were issued with pink jackets with the same design (shown far left). These albums were issued with a stiff paper cover that opened at the top. This was made as a one-piece paper foldover that was glued on the back using flaps on the right and left sides (see near left). Later issues used different colors and used standard cardboard jackets opening at the side. Still later, redesigned covers were used that were more in synch with early-1950s covers. In the discography below, we have illustrated some of the different covers used. |
