In October, 1958, just in time for the Christmas holiday, Columbia put out a series of "Greatest Hits"
packages, including albums by Johnny Mathis (previous page), Doris Day, Guy Mitchell, Johnnie Ray, Jo
Stafford, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Frankie Laine, the Four Lads, and a few months later, Marty
Robbins and a second package of Johnny Mathis hits (on next page). This was their first big push to
repackage hits on a widespread basis. Although none of the albums except Mathis' charted (there were
only 25 positions on the LP chart at the time), they sold well and have over the years become staples for
music fans and collectors alike. Their success prompted Columbia in the future to issue "Greatest Hits"
packages when artists had a lull in their careers.
Mono albums on this page had the "six eye" label, with the deep groove (far left). Promotional albums had a white label with red print (near left). | ||
The stereo counterpart of the "six eye" label is shown at far left, with the promotional stereo label shown at near left. These early stereo issues also had the deep groove. |
