In June, 1967, Columbia tried a novel promotional campaign. A San Francisco group called Moby Grape
had been gaining popularity on the West Coast, and to introduce them to the world with a splash, they
released their debut album, along with five singles from the album, all on the same day, June 6 (D-Day,
23 years later). Although it sounded like a good idea at the time, and the album wasn't bad (it made #24),
the singles barely made a dent in the charts, the best performer being "Omaha," which lasted a mere
three weeks on the Hot 100 reaching only #88. The other charter, "Hey Grandma," only reached the
Bubbling Under chart and was gone after one week. Then there were some complaints about the obscene
gesture on the front cover (see right) that had to be edited out on the second pressing, not to mention that
almost immediately the group began to fall apart. The return on all the promotional budget for the singles
realized nothing. Even though it had sounded good, and the group made a couple more albums,
Columbia never tried that kind of PR trick again.
During April, 1967, Columbia corrected the stereo arrows on the mono labels. Mono albums
released after April, 1967, have the "two eye" label with just "MONO" in white at the bottom, without the
"360 Sound" or arrows. Albums released in April can have either label.
Also that spring, Columbia was preparing for a switch to "stereo only" albums, which took place in 1968.
In order to "update" their mono catalog, they released another large batch of electronically rechanneled
reissues from their mono-only back catalog.
The mono releases on this page issued before about April, 1967, used the "two eye" label with "360 SOUND" MONO "360 SOUND" with two arrows flanking the white legend at the bottom (far left). The stereo label was similar, but the white lettering near the bottom said "360 SOUND" STEREO "360 SOUND" with two arrows flanking the white legend at the bottom (near left). | ||
Starting in April, 1967, Columbia corrected the mono labels, which had previously carried stereo logos. Most of the mono issues released starting in May, 1967, have only "MONO" near the bottom of the label (far left). Albums released in April are known with either label. Promotional albums such as shown at near left had a timing strip on the front cover, a "Demonstration-Not for Sale" stamp on the back of the jacket, but the regular label inside. |

CL-2698/CS-9498 - Moby Grape - Moby Grape [6-6-67] (7-67, #24) First cover, showing
Don Stevenson "flipping the bird" in front of the washboard. This was airbrushed out of subsequent
printings, but the original cover is quite common. Columbia put on a full-court press for this group,
releasing five singles from the album simultaneously with the LP release. Only "Omaha" and "Hey
Grandma" charted, but "8:05," possibly a better song than the two charters, received FM airplay. Hey
Grandma/Mr. Blues/Fall On You/8:05/Come In The Morning/Omaha/Naked, If I Want To//Someday/Ain't
No Use/Sitting By The Window/Changes/Lazy Me/Indifference

CL-2698/CS-9498 - Moby Grape - Moby Grape [1967] Second cover, with finger
airbrushed out. The red flag in the background of the first cover was actually an American flag that was
colored in. In the second cover, to avoid the appearance of a political statement, the flag was changed to
black. The unretouched original photo is shown at right. Hey Grandma/Mr. Blues/Fall On You/8:05/Come
In The Morning/Omaha/Naked, If I Want To//Someday/Ain't No Use/Sitting By The Window/Changes/Lazy
