Harmony was Columbia's budget label. The albums began in 1957, around the time that budget
independents such as Tops, Crown, and Design (Pickwick) were starting to issue albums. The Harmony
product, in some ways, was very similar to those labels. None had album cover spines; the covers were
made from two pieces of thin cardboard held together by the paper slicks. The Harmony albums,
however, held together better. Tops, Crown and Design sold for $1.49 each; Harmony sold for $1.98. All
three sometimes were sold in polyethylene bags with the price boldly shown. All offered a wide variety
of musical genres.
But the similarity ended there. While Tops, Crown and Design often were pressed on inferior vinyl,
Harmony albums were pressed, at least initially, on the same quality vinyl used for Columbia product.
The artists on Harmony tended to be Columbia's artists, not bands hired for the album or old masters
from questionable sources. The Harmony albums, unlike the others, sometimes were packaged with an
inner sleeve.
In the late 1950s, Harmony began experimenting with pressings on polystyrene, probably as a cost
saving measure, but later reverted to vinyl.
The first Harmony label was red with silver print. It was the label for all original pressings of the albums on this page. Later reissues used the black label shown on the next page. |
