Tumbleweed was a subsidiary of Famous Music Corp (a Gulf + Western Company). The short-lived Tumbleweed Records label was founded by Bill Szymczyk and Larry Ray and based in Denver, Colorado. It started in late 1971 and ran until early 1973, just over a year.

The home producer, and probably manager, was Bill Szymczyk, who would later find fame and fortune as producer with the Eagles. The records were recorded in Denver or Los Angeles, with a lot of attention given to packaging, with gatefold or embossed covers, inner sleeves, different labels for A and B sides, and even thick song books furnished with some of the albums. With this type of packaging extravagance and lack of chart success, it didn't take long for the money to run out, which it did fairly quickly.

"We lacked for nothing," Szymczyk said. "The Gulf + Western corporate structure went along with it for the first year, anyway, until we ran through a million and a half dollars – a lot of bucks back then!" (Quote from Colorado Music Experience).

Tumbleweed only issued nine original albums and one sampler in its first incarnation. Along the way, they also distributed a few albums for other labels. In 1985, original owner Larry Ray resurrected the defunct company from his home base in Washington State to put out one album and two singles by Carla Collen.

The actual album labels were similar in design, but varied by color. Labels on sides a and b were different for each album, and sometimes reversed depending on the pressing plant. A gallery of the labels is included below.
