Teem was a budget label subsidiary of Ace Records of Jackson, Mississippi, and also owned by
Johnny Vincent. It operated from 1963 to 1964. The list price on these budget albums was 98 cents.
To our knowledge, the albums on the Teem label were all mono only. The albums were pressed
inexpensively and the jackets were one-piece heavy paper with about an inch of fold-over on the top and
bottom of the back. In the liner notes to LP 5004, it notes "No expenses were barred in the production of
this keep-sake album." Glad they said that; we couldn't tell.
There is one album of particular note on Teem. Johnny Vincent found a wannabe singer named Glenn
Sutton working as an electric razor repairman and insurance salesman locally in Jackson, while playing
at night in clubs with other musicians like Murry Kellum. He recorded a single for Ace in 1962 ("Ring on
Your Finger"/"Don't Have You", Ace 658), then recorded a song ("I Gotta Leave This Town") on the flip
of Kellum's classic "Long Tall Texan" [M.O.C. 45-653] (Sutton also wrote Kellum's followup, "Red
Ryder"). Vincent liked what he heard enough to have Sutton record a whole album of Hank Williams
songs [Greatest Songs of Hank Williams, Teem LP-5000], which of course didn't sell well, and
Sutton split for Nashville soon after. But Sutton would go on to much bigger things as a country
songwriter and producer starting in the mid-1960s, penning such hits as David Houston's "Almost
Persuaded" and Tammy Wynette's "I Don't Wanna Play House" and "Take Me To Your World," as well
as Jerry Lee Lewis' "She Still Comes Around (To What's Left of Me)" and "What's Made Milwaukee
Famous (Has Made A Loser Out of Me)." His production credits include his wife Lynn Anderson's #1 hit,
"(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden." And those are just a few of his successes. The Teem disc
was the first album for Sutton, who in 1999 was voted into the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
We have also listed the singles released on the Teem label, as well as the two other Johnny Vincent
subsidiaries, Vin Records and Pink Records. To our knowledge, neither of these two labels ever
released albums.
The Teem LP label was dark blue (far left) or purple (center left) with silver print, "TEEM" in block letters at the top. The label used for singles (near left) had the "TEEM" at the top in multicolor stripes. The label itself was blue, black and white with black print, and vaguely resembled the Ace blue and white label. |
