About 1970, Jewel-Paula owner Stan Lewis, who had spent a lot of time in Chicago with his friend
Leonard Chess, bought the masters from the Chicago blues labels Cobra and J.O.B. It was these
masters that provided the basis for a new series of CDs issued in 1991, the Paula PCD-01 Blues Series.
Cobra Records was started in Chicago in 1956 by record shop owner Eli Toscano, with Chicago's
"promoter's promoter" Howard Bedno handling promotion and radio hobnobbing. More importantly, the
A&R and studio decisions were made by bassist and Chicago blues legend Willie Dixon, who went out
and signed Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, and Magic Sam, among others, and wrote songs for them. Other
artists on the label included Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm, Louis Myers & the Aces, the Clouds,
Sunnyland Slim, Shakey Horton, Duke Jenkins, Little Willie Foster, Betty Everett, Harold Burrage,
Shakey Jake, and Charles Clark. Cobra was originally located behind a television repair shop at 2854
W. Roosevelt Road, on Chicago's West Side, and soon moved down the street to 3346. It lasted until
1959.
J.O.B. Records, so named for the initials of its owners, James Burke Oden and Joe Brown, started
releasing records in Chicago in the summer of 1949 and lasted until 1957. Artists on the label included
J.B. Lenoir, Snooky Pryor, Johnny Shines, Baby Face Leroy (Foster), Memphis Minnie, St. Louis Jimmy
(who was actually James Burke Oden, the label's owner), Sunnyland Slim, the John Brim Trio, Grace
Brim, King Kolax, John Lee (Henley), Henry Palmer & Mitzi Mars, Joiner's Five Trumpets, Mildred
Richards, Bob Phillips, Floyd Jones, Ray Sneed, Eddie Boyd, Little Hudson's (Shower) Red Devil Trio,
J.T. Brown, Robert Dunbar, the Heavenly Kings, Earl H. Pugh, the Airibians, Eddie Clark, Zono Sago,
Sax Kari, Ernest Cotton, Wilbur Clark, Willie Welch's Band, Willie Cobbs, the Gales, and others. J.O.B.
was located at 4008 S. Ellis Avenue and 1121 W. 59th Street in Chicago. More information on the J.O.B.
label can be found on Robert Campbell's
J.O.B. Label Page.
Although we have found JLP-004, released 1956, we have found no other indication that J.O.B. put out
albums. Ironically, in 1950 there was another, unrelated, label named JOB (no periods) that put out
singles by Nathaniel "Stick Horse" Hammond, run out of (of all places) Shreveport, Louisiana! The
Shreveport JOB label was owned by Ray Bartlett.
In addition to the Paula PCD-01 Blues series, Paula also put out several other series of CDs and
Cassettes noted below, including the PCD-800 Gospel Series, the P-1000 Gospel Series, the
P/PCD-333 Reissue Series, and the P/PCD-9000 Gold Series. Also included here are a couple of
relevant box sets issued in 1993 on the Capricorn label and a couple of related reissue CDs on other
labels.
