Accent Album Discography

Accent Records was founded in 1954 at 6608 Gretna Avenue in Whittier, California; by 1957 it had moved to 1608 Argyle in Hollywood. The Label was started by Scott Seely and Dave Obin. A&R was by Dave Garvin and Scott Seely. Scott Seely who was born in 1911 ran the label until 2011 when he died.

Accent Records started in 1954 releasing 45s and then by 1956 releasing LPs. The music on the label was really eclectic, running from MOR, pop, jazz, gospel/Christian, psychedelic, to poetry readings, and even children's records. Many of the releases on the label are by Buddy Merrill, a guitar player. The Merrill recordings seem to be the only records that had wide distribution. Some of the albums might have been produced for artists to sell at their performances. One obscure album on the label, Spirit of the Golden Juice by F. J. McMahon (ACS 5049), is selling for high prices for the original pressing. McMahon was an air force veteran who recorded his only album, a thoughtful acoustic rock collection, upon returning from overseas. It found favor with music fans and collectors, but few copies of the original were pressed. It has, however, been reissued on vinyl and also released on CD.

Accent's national releases were handled by GNP/Crescendo Records. The Buddy Merrill LP discs and 45 RPM discs were released nationally. Some of the Accent albums eventually were issued under the GNP/Crescendo label.

Mono and stereo catalogue numbering varied. Initially, mono releases had the AC prefix, but by the mid- 1960s, when stereo versions were also released, the mono numbers had an MLP suffix while the stereo counterparts had a SLP suffix. This was discontinued in 1966, when the mono versions reverted to the AC prefix while the stereo had an S added as a suffix, at least for 5017. Starting with 5018, and continuing until the end of the series, the prefixes AC for mono and ACS for stereo were used. Accent seemed to hold on to mono releases much longer than most labels, still releasing mono albums into the 1970s.

The first Accent label (far left) was blue with silver print, with the Accent logo on top. This was used for the first few albums in the AC-5000 series, then used again starting in 1974 as their regular label. After the first few albums, Accent used a red label (near left) with dark lettering, with a dark field at the top of the label.
On at least one album, Accent used a beige label with blue print (far left). The promotional label (near left) was white with black print.
