Deram Records was started as a subsidiary to Decca Records in the UK in 1966. An American
counterpart was distributed by London Records in the United States. Deram was active until 1973 in the
US, after which it released material sporadically until about 1980, when it became inactive. In the UK, it
was active until 1975, then operated sporadically until 1983 for a few artists like Bananarama (whose
singles were on London in the US), but since then it has largely been used for reissues.
Deram was originally established as an outlet for high quality music releases using their "Deramic
Sound" process of recording and mixing. The Decca engineers used two four-track recorders to record
paired stereo tracks, then blended them, which was an innovation in 1966-67, but the widespread
appearance of 8-track recording decks soon made the process outdated. The Deramic Sound Series
was discontinued by 1968 in the US, although the DSS series continued in the UK until DML/SML 724 in
late 1969. The name "Deramic Sound" seems to be a contraction of "Decca Panoramic Sound", with
"Deram" a word coined by shortening "Deramic".
Outside of orchestral recordings, Deram signed a number of artists who would become known as
"progressive rock" innovators. These included the revamped Moody Blues with new singer Justin
Hayward, Ten Years After with guitar flash Alvin Lee, Cat Stevens, David Bowie, Procol Harum, and the
Keef Hartley Band.
For the first year or so, the UK and the US counterparts of Deram issued essentially the same records.
Starting in 1967, the UK Deram label began issuing many more singles than the US counterpart. Still,
the ones the US label did release were among those released in the UK. The unreleased singles in the
US were rarely hits in the UK, and it appears to have been a cost saving measure.
There were relatively few singles released by US Deram that didn't have a UK counterpart. One of
these was the Moody Blues single "Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon)" [Deram 85028], which
reached #24 in the summer of 1968. The single was only the first 2:16 of the 5:05 track "Forever
Afternoon (Tuesday?)" from their album Days of Future Passed [Deram DE 16012/DES 18012];
Deram chose not to release the edited version in the UK, opting instead for the non-US single "Voices in
the Sky."
Deram albums in the US used the DE prefix for mono, and DES for stereo. In the UK, the prefix DML
designated mono, while SML was for stereo releases. Deram went to stereo-only album releases in the
US at about the start of 1968, while in the UK, mono and stereo releases continued until mid-1970, when
the UK catalog finally switched to stereo only. For corresponding US/UK albums, the UK versions often
had extra tracks as a result of the US standard 12 tracks vs. the UK standard 14.
The earliest two Deram singles were released about late September, 1966. They were Cat Stevens' "I
Love My Dog" [Deram 7501 US/Deram 102 UK], which reached #118 in the US and #28 in the UK, and
"Where The Good Times Are"/"Happy New Year" by Beverley [Deram 7502/101], which
did not chart. Cat Stevens' followup record, "Matthew and Son" [Deram 7505/110], was
issued in late 1966 in the UK, where it reached #2, and in early 1967 in the US, where it reached #115.
In early 1967, Deram released two singles by the Move which they had leased. "Night of Fear" [Deram
7504/109] charted in January, 1967, in the UK, eventually reaching #2, but failed to chart in the US.
Likewise, "I Can Hear the Grass Grow" [Deram 7506/117] reached #5 in the UK in the spring, but missed
in the US. The Move, of course, later evolved into Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), with a solid career in
the 1970s and 1980s.
In March, 1967, Deram had their first international hit with "I Was Kaiser Bill's Batman" [Deram 85005
US/Deram 112 UK], which reached #5 in the UK and #20 (#8 Easy Listening) in the US. About the same
time, Cat Stevens' third single, "I'm Gonna Get Me A Gun" [Deram 85006/118] made #6 in the UK, but
failed to chart in the US. Another UK-only hit, "Birds and Bees" by Warm Sounds [Deram 85007/120,
#27] charted in May.
Also in May, Deram released a blockbuster classic: "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum [Deram
7507/126]. It quickly jumped to #1 in the UK and #5 in the US, also reaching #22 on the US R&B charts.
Unfortunately for Deram, the group moved on after the one single and an album, with followups on the
Regal Zonophone label in the UK and on A&M in the US.
Other 1967 chart successes were limited to the UK: the Amen Corner's "Gin House Blues" [Deram
85014/136, #12] which charted in July, and their followup "World of Broken Hearts" [Dearm 85021/151,
#26] which charted in October; "Let's Go To San Francisco" by the Flowerpot Men [Deram 7513/160],
which reached #4 on the UK charts in late summer; Cat Stevens' "Bad Night" [Deram 85015/140, #20]
and "Kitty" [Deram 7518/156, #47].
At the end of 1967, Deram put out another classic, the Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin" [Deram
85023/161], which surprisingly was at that time a lukewarm hit, reaching #19 in the UK and only #103 in
the US. But over the years, the song has proved its enduring popularity. In 1972, a remixed single
version with the same catalog number went to #2 in the US (#37 Easy Listening), and in 1979 the song
re-charted in the UK, reaching #14. The Moody Blues followed in the US with the aforementioned
"Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon), which reached #24 in the US in the summer of 1968, while the
UK choice of "Voices in the Sky" [Deram 85033/196] reached #27 there. "Ride My See-Saw" [Deram
85033/213] rounded out the year for the Moodies, making # 61 in the US and #42 in the UK.
Amen Corner's cover of the Outsiders' "Bend Me, Shape Me" (originally on the album The Outsiders
In) was issued in the UK as Deram 172 in late 1967, and made it to #3 on the UK charts starting in
January, 1968. With the American Breed's competing cover version stomping up the charts over here at
the same time (to #5), Deram decided not to release the Amen Corner single here. Two other 1968 hits
on Deram charted in the UK only: Honeybus' "I Can't Let Maggie Go" [Deram 7520/182, #8] in the
spring, and "High in the Sky" by Amen Corner [Deram 7521/197, #6] in the summer. Near
the end of the year, "King Croesus" by the World of Oz [Deram 85034/205] reached #126 on the US
"Bubbling Under" chart.
February, 1969, brought another UK-only hit, "She's Not There" by Neil MacArthur [Deram 7524/225],
which reached #34. Interestingly, from this point, most of the Deram chart hits were US-only, partly
because they charted below #50 on the US charts and the UK charts only went to #50. In March,
the Flirtations scored with "Nothing But a Heartache" [Deram 85038/216], which reached #34 here. With
US-only hits by World of Oz and the Flirtations, Deram didn't even bother to issue their followup singles
in the UK. Although the World of Oz followup didn't chart, the Flirtations reached #111 with "South
Carolina" [Deram 85048] in the summer. The next Moody Blues single, "Never Comes the Day" [Deram
85044/247] reched #91 in the US, but failed in the UK. This was the last single before the Moody Blues
formed their own label, Threshold.
1970 brought another US-only hit, "My Baby Loves Love" by White Plains [Deram 85058/280], which
entered the US charts in April, eventually reaching #13. Their September followup, "Lovin' You Baby"
[Deram 85066/312] reached #82 in the US.
The Brotherhood Of Man broke the string of US-only hits with "United We Stand" [Deram 85059/284],
which reached #10 in the UK and #13 in the US (#15 Easy Listening) in early 1970. Their two followup
hits, however, were back to US only: "Where Are You Going To My Love" [Deram 85065/298] made #61
(#11 Easy Listening), and "Reach Out Your Hand" [Deram 85073/327] made #77 in the summer of 1971.
The only other hit for Deram was a single they "borrowed" from sister label Parrot, "House of the Rising
Sun" by Frijid Pink [Parrot 341 US/Deram 288 UK], which reached #4 in the UK and #7 in the US.
By 1973, the label's hits had been dwindling for some years, and they stopped issuing product for the
most part. They still had some assets, however, and put out a few singles and albums throughout the
rest of the 1970s.
The regular US label (far left) was white with a red (or salmon pink) field for the top half of the label, with "DERAM" in white letters on the red field. The UK label (near left) used a tan or gold field, but was otherwise similar in design. Early issues in both the US and UK designated mono or stereo in a small rectangle below the center hole, with white letters on a black field. This designation continued into the early 1970s for both. Later labels dropped the black box. | ||
The DSS series in the US had a white background with black print, with a large DSS logo at the top and a Deram logo at the bottom in tan or light brown (far left). The UK version (near left) used a red color with the same basic design. |
