RKO-Unique Records started life as Unique Records in New York City in 1955. It was first located at
1697 Broadway. By 1957, the label was acquired by RKO Teleradio Pictures, Inc., and had moved to
1440 Broadway, where it was billed as RKO-Unique. In November, 1958, the label headquarters
moved to 11-17 E. 45th Street in New York, where it operated until the label closed up shop in 1960.
The president of the label, and undoubtedly it's A&R head, was Joe Leahy, a band leader who recorded
several albums for the label and had a minor hit on Tower Records in 1965 with the instrumental "Life"
[Tower 150]. Stanley Borden was the general manager until November, 1958, when he was replaced by
John H. Begley.
The early RKO-Unique label (far left) was green with black print, with "UNIQUE RECORDS" at the top with the RKO lightning bolt to the left of "Unique." This label was used into the 120s (120-122 are all known with this label). It was replaced with a "sunburst" label that was issued in various colors. At near left is the yellow sunburst label. | ||
At far left is the blue sunburst version, used mainly for stereo issues, and at near left the green sunburst label variation. Promotional copies of this label were white with black print. The sunburst label was used as early as 110, which had a green sunburst label and was issued with a white promo label. |
