The Tops label and the Tops/Mayfair label were actually the monaural and stereophonic counterparts of the same label. The albums issued were identical except for stereo mode, with the same cover graphics. Mayfair albums were initially all issued on colored vinyl, mostly yellow or gold. The main series was the mono L1500 series. The stereo counterparts to the Tops issues were on the Tops/Mayfair or Mayfair label. The corresponding numbers to the L15xx series were 95xxS for stereo issues, with the "xx" representing corresponding numbers for mono and stereo. In the discography below, the first catalog number (in the L 1500 series) is the mono Tops issue, while the second catalog number (in the corresponding 9500 S series) is the stereo Mayfair issue.

The Tops label was black with silver print. The first label design, used from 1957 until the early 1960s, had "TOPS" at the top around the edge of the label, surrounded by two sets of musical notes (tied eighth notes). Around the edge of the label on the upper left was "ULTRA-PHONIC" and to the upper right "HIGH FIDELITY". Around the edge at the bottom of the label was "33 1/3 RPM LONG PLAYING MICROGROOVE". About 1963, Tops issued a series of albums in stereo for the first time without the "Mayfair" designation, on the "Magnificent Hits" series (Tops 9743-9766), and used a second label, with a shield on top, a silver band around the edge of the label, with "STEREO" around the bottom edge.
Until the "Magnificent Hits" series came out in 1963 (Tops catalog numbers 9743-9766), all Tops stereo versions came out on the Mayfair label. Early Mayfair albums were all on colored vinyl, with red, gold, yellow, and multicolor vinyl known. The most common colors are yellow and gold. These all had a blue label with silver print. Later, after Tops had spun off the GoldenTone label, GoldenTone/Mayfair began reissuing albums on black vinyl, using a black and silver label. We have not seen any Mayfair issues in monaural only.
Early Tops/Mayfair stereo albums used the circular Tops/Mayfair logo at left, which at the start had "TOPS" in large letters and "Mayfair" in smaller script around the top of the logo. Later "Mayfair" was featured in larger letters as shown in the logo on the right, with "Tops" in smaller print at the top.
Still later, the logo was replaced with a Tops/Mayfair shield-shaped logo, which even later dropped the Tops name altogether and just used Mayfair.
The original pressings of the early Tops albums (at least into the late 1530s) had a small white circle near the top of the album jacket. This was a handy place for record stores to write the price of the album. Reissues often did not have this small "dot." Many of the Tops albums came with a blank paper sleeve, although some of the later albums had a specially-printed Tops inner sleeve with some typical record label propaganda within a diamond shaped box.
One of the main selling points for Tops albums was that they sold for $1.49 when other albums of the time sold for twice that, or $3.98. This was hyped sometimes by placing the albums in clear poly bags (as was the custom of some of the major labels when stereo came out), or more often, by a small gold sticker on the album cover that noted the price, along with the sales pitch, "$3.98 Value."

Studio musicians for the session included Tommy Tedesco. Of course, the original Pied Pipers started as a late-1930s octet, which was reduced to a quartet by the end of the 1930s. The Pied Pipers of the early 1940s included Jo Stafford, John Huddleston, Chuck Lowry, and Billy Wilson, but Wilson was replaced by former Tommy Dorsey guitarist Clark Yocum early on, before the group had their most popular records. June Hutton replaced Stafford by late 1944, and Hutton continued with the group until Sue Allen replaced her in 1950. So for this record, the only member that was with the group when they had their 1940s hits was Yocum, with Allen joining much later and the others even more recently.
