Colgems Album Discography
Colgems was started in
mid-1966 as an advantageous joint venture between Columbia Pictures
(Screen Gems) and RCA; the former produced a show, the latter aired it on its NBC Television network.
In the fall of 1966, Screen Gems started a television series called The Monkees, which was
loosely based on the Beatles' movie A Hard Day's Night. Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael
Nesmith and Peter Tork were selected to be the Monkees when they answered an ad placed in
Variety. All of the successful applicants needed to have some musical background and talent.
David Jones was a British
singer and actor who had a starring role in the original London production
of Oliver! in the early 1960s, where he played the Artful Dodger. And he already had charted a
top-100 minor hit single the year before with "What Are We Going To Do?" on Colpix.
Peter Tork was an
accomplished multi-instrument musician who played bass on the Monkees'
recordings, but also guitar, keyboards (e.g., the piano intro on "Daydream Believer"), banjo, harpsichord
and other various and sundry instruments.
Because of the musical nature of the show, the Colgems record label was launched.
Columbia Pictures/Screen Gems (the former was used for movies, the latter for TV productions) also
started an Atlantic-distributed label, SGC (for Screen Gems/Columbia) and owned Bell Records.
Colgems is also noted
as the first label for country star Michael Martin Murphey, who was a staff writer for Columbia Pictures
and made his LP recording debut with the Lewis and Clarke Expedition on Colgems COS-105. The
Lewis and Clarke Expedition was most of the remaining members of The Survivors (mentioned in the
Michael Nesmith writeup above). According to the album liner notes, the group was Travis Lewis,
Boomer Clarke, John London, John Raines, and Ken Bloom. Lewis, Clarke, and London had all been in
The Survivors back in Texas. "Travis Lewis" was actually Michael (Martin) Murphey, who later had the
hit "Wildfire" [3-75 #3 on Epic 50084] and made it big as a country star. "Boomer Clarke" was actually
Owen Castleman, who later had a minor solo hit as Boomer Castleman with the song "Judy Mae" [5-75
#33 on Mums 6038]. John London [John Kuehne] was one of Mike Nesmith's close friends and ended
up in his post-Monkees group The First National Band. The group appeared on Bandstand and also in
some movies. Two singles from the Lewis and Clarke LP charted ("I Feel Good (I Feel Bad)" [8-67 #64
on Colgems 1006], and "Chain Around The Flowers" [5-68 #131 on Colgems 1022]), but the album did
not. Nevertheless, it is an interesting early look at the songs and style of Michael Martin Murphey. It also
had one of the earliest recordings of the future Don Fardon/Raiders hit "Indian Reservation."
