The Grunt label was formed on August 7, 1971 by the group Jefferson Airplane. The label was a
subsidiary of RCA. It was intended as a vehicle for release of Jefferson Airplane albums, group member
solo projects and new artists that the group members felt were worthy of public interest.
The first Grunt release was the Jefferson Airplane's seventh LP, titled Bark, in September of
1971. Because of disagreements among the group, the album was their first in two years. By this time
Marty Balin and Spencer Dryden were gone. The new lineup for the Jefferson Airplane was Paul
Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, Grace Slick and Joey Covington plus an unofficial member,
Papa John Creach. The album reached number 11 and was one of the Airplane's best sellers. At the
same time Bark was being recorded, Paul Kantner and Grace Slick recorded Sunfighter,
which was released in December and reached number 89. Also in December, Papa John Creach
released his first solo album.
In 1972, the Jefferson Airplane recorded its eighth album, titled Long John Silver, and at the
same time Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady recorded the third Hot Tuna album titled Burgers
for the Grunt label. Hot Tuna's LP Burgers was released in April, and went to number 68 in the
charts. Three months later, Long John Silver was released and reached number 20, earning a
gold record.
Acts not part of the Jefferson Airplane to appear on Grunt were woodwind player Jack Bonus in 1972,
and an album released in June of 1973 titled Child of Nature by the band Jack Traylor &
Steelwind, which featured Craig Chaquico on guitar. The group "1" (One) had an odd album called
Come which was vaguely Asian sounding. The group was led by a certified (certifiable?) local
eccentric who wanted the album to self-destruct after playing (so the listener would have to buy more), A
Richmond Talbott album titled Getting' Plenty was scheduled, but not released.
Albums continued to be released on the Grunt label into the early 1980s but almost all of them were by
Jefferson Airplane, a later (and even more successful) incarnation called Jefferson Starship, then simply
Starship, or by members of those bands.
The regular Grunt label stayed the same for all of its releases where custom labels were not used. It is black with white lettering and "GRUNT" written in stylized red, white and silver lettering in the form of an arc on the top half of the label. At first, the labels were printed on glossy paper stock (far left), with the following text in the form of an arc at the bottom of the label : "AFTERTHOUGHT PRODUCTIONS CORP.". Beginning with FTR 1006, this text changed to "GRUNT RECORDS. MANUFACTURED AND DISTRIBUTED BY RCA". For the RCA consolidated series (near left), some records have the following text "RCA RECORDS. GRUNT RECORDS. MANUFACTURED AND DISTRIBUTED BY RCA". The RCA consolidated series used paper stock with a matte finish for the labels. |
||
Grunt used a number of custom labels. The one at the far left is from the album Jefferson Starship Gold [BZL1-3247], while the one at near left is from the album Spitfire [BFL1-1557]. Both sides of the record had the same label in these two cases. Inner paper sleeves for these albums were glossy paper with colorful designs to match the motif. |
||
The album Earth [BXL1-2515] had a different custom label on each side of the record. At far left is the A side, while the B side is at near left. |

FTR-1010 - Gettin' Plenty - Richmond Talbott [unissued] According to Jeff Tamarkin's
book Got a Revolution: The Turbulent Flight of Jefferson Airplane, Talbott was a blues guitarist
and singer nee Steve Talbott. He was a friend of Jorma Kaukonen, and apparently this
friendship got him signed to Grunt. An album was scheduled, and Talbott began working on it. According
to execs at Grunt, the album was not what everyone had hoped, and it was deemed in their best
interests to kill the release and cut their losses.
