Dynamic House and TeleHouse were two of the major telemarketers of record albums in the
early-to-mid 1970s.
I. Getting Started
The origins of Dynamic House and TeleHouse Records go back to 1963 and a businessman named Jon
M. Huntsman. At the time, he was an officer in Olson Brothers, the nation's largest independent egg
producers and distributors. It was owned by his wife's uncle Dean Olson and his brother Glenn Olson.
The job paid $12,000 per year, and Huntsman (pictured at right) had a wife and several children to
support. In his own words from his book Barefoot to Billionaire: Reflections on a Life's Work and a
Promise to Cure Cancer, he notes:
"To keep us afloat, I had begun moonlighting ... in what was my first entrepreneurial venture. Karl
Engemann, a trusted and loyal friend, who also shared responsibilities with me at our LDS ward
(church), worked for Capitol Records. We formed a record company in 1963 called Continental
Productions Company (later changed to Continental Dynamics). The plan was to make records that
would appeal to Morman audiences. We managed to produce two albums over the next year, but we
were a long way from making the big time. The main problem was that neither of us had time to manage
the venture. We lost track of inventory and receivables. It was more of a challenge than we had
expected. Then [in 1965] a Christmastime visit to a tire store propelled us in the right direction.
"The local Goodyear and Firestone outlets had a successful holiday promotion in which a Christmas-
themed album was offered for a dollar.... I thought if people made a special trip to a tire store to
purchase a Christmas record, wouldn't they be even more likely to buy one at a supermarket where they
routinely shop? Nearly everybody shopped at Safeway, and Lorenzo Hoopes, a trusted friend, was
senior vice president of the chain. ..."
Hoopes wanted Danny Kaye for the album, but he was unavailable, so they "settled for Nat King
Cole." Capitol's Creative Products division (predecessor to Capitol Special Markets) found 16 tracks
in their vaults they could pare down for an album, some of them previously unreleased. When
Huntsman looked at the tunes, he felt, "It had possibilities."
"By Thanksgiving, Capitol Records had produced and delivered 250,000 [of the Nat King Cole
Christmas] records at 50 cents a platter. We sold them to Safeway for 75 cents apiece for nationwide
distribution. The stores, in turn, charged customers a dollar. After only 10 days, every album had been
snapped up."
The whole delivery of 250,000 records sold out in 10 days! It was too late to order another pressing, but
it meant that Continental Productions was in the black for the year. Next year, it was a Bing Crosby
album. Then Perry Como, Julie Andrews, Andy Williams, Glen Campbell, Johnny Mathis, Marty
Robbins, and in 1973 back to Nat King Cole, this time with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians.
Karl Engemann's bosses at Capitol were not really pleased with his involvement due to possible
conflict-of-interest, so Engemann sold his interest in Continental Productions back to Huntsman for
$5,000 after the first Nat Cole record. The next few years of selling LPs at Christmastime netted
Huntsman six figures, but he was reluctant to go into the record business full time – too uncertain.
About 1970, however, he did hire the very creative Larry Crane as Vice President of Continental
Dynamics, Inc. This move would pay large dividends in the future.
II. From Grocery Stores to Late-Night TV
After continued success selling Christmas records in retail stores, Continental Dynamics started to
issue records under the Continental label name. Continuing to produce special inexpensive promotional
Christmas discs, in 1971 they issued a Louis Armstrong 45rpm single for P.J. Lorrilard Tobacco
Company which sold for 25 cents with the purchase of Kent, True, Newport, or Old Gold cigarettes (with
some outlets offering the record free with purchase). On one side, Louis narrated "The Night Before
Christmas," while the flip was his trumpet on "When the Saints Go Marching In" [Continental CR-1001].
They followed that with a 3-LP box set called Touching the Stars: The Total Beauty Experience
[Continental CR-1002], which was a spoken word collection of beauty tips for women. Individual
discs were numbered CR1-1002, CR2-1002, and CR3-1002. Continental's spoken word records were "a
product of Infotape."
In 1972, Continental Dynamics got tapes of a Christmas performance at Radio City Music Hall and got
RCA to press up the album as Continental CR-1004. The matrix number on the album of B4RS-0648
tells the story: B=1972, 4=Re-recorded from client's furnished tapes, R=12", 33-1/3rpm, S=Stereo. The
next release was Continental CR-1005, a self-help album by Norman Vincent Peale, author of the best
selling book The Power of Positive Thinking.
Meanwhile, CDI also established Continental House in 1971 to start their television marketing endeavors
with a collection of oldies from RCA Special Products. The ad for The Greatest Love Songs of the
Century, Vols. 1-4 (two single LPs and a 2-LP set) starred Jaye P. Morgan as host. Crane was also
listed as the (reissue) producer for these albums. Crane hired a number of entertainers in the next few
years to host his commercials, including Chubby Checker, Fats Domino, Dick Haymes, Mickey Dolenz,
Rudy Vallee, and Arthur Fiedler. The Rudy Valee commercial seemed to become the blueprint for this
type of advertisement, by Continental House or anyone else, for that matter. But there were apparently
no more Continental House products (perhaps due to confusion that Continental House was a world
famous hotel in Istanbul). Instead, they took the other half of the Continental Dynamics name, and
started Dynamic House the next year, which was essentially Continental House renamed.
Enter Dynamic House. CDI contracted with Roulette Records in 1972 to put together a four-LP set called
The Greatest Rock and Roll Hits, with songs culled from Roulette's many oldies albums over the
years. This set was the first Dynamic House offering, on its own label, and was sold via
late-night nationwide television ads hosted by Chubby Checker. The set proved popular enough that it
was pressed many times (under this name and others) by Dynamic House, TeleHouse, Adam VIII, and
even Ronco in Canada. It was so successful – winning gold record awards – that
Dynamic House issued a Volume 2 the next year, again from the Roulette catalog. The catalog
numbers for these two Dynamic House records were 0001 and 0002, although these numbers didn't
appear on the box sets themselves, just in the catalog. The individual records were numbered Dynamic
House CR-1005 through CR-1008, and CR-1009 through CR-1012 for the eight discs in the two
volumes. (The duplication of CR-1005 as a catalog number didn't seem to bother anyone, nor would the
duplication of CR-1009 the next year.) Dynamic House also contracted with various special products
divisions to put out several other telemarketed albums during 1972 and 1973.
To get an idea of who was in the business in those early days of telemarketing, the October 7, 1972
edition of Billboard had a story on page 1 which set out the lay of the land. At the National
Premium Show in Chicago the week before, "Yet another dramatic influence in the premium field is the
success of over a dozen firms promoting special packages via late-night television. Labels here
classify this segment of the premium business as "broadcast packaging" and banners in booths were
keyed to the themes developed by such TV promoters as K-tel, Tampa Marketing & Brookville, Ronco,
Dynamic House div. of Continental Dynamics, Inc, Plantation, Cimco, Quality Mail Order, Crystal Corp.,
Cormer, Concert Classics and Blaine House."
In the November 18, 1972 issue of Billboard, an article on page 3 revealed that Dynamic House
(probably actually CDI) had other operations besides telemarketing. They note that the company started
into 4-channel tapes back in 1970, and by 1972 had provided more than 50,000 demo tapes and 10,000
demo discs to four leading hardware [reel-to-reel tape machines] manufacturers as part of their complete
program of production packaging and display plans. VP Harry Mynatt explained that his firm goes to a
client and offers a complete program. Dynamic House has no catalog for this type of service, but
salesmen work with the client to develop a plan. They offer a five-pack of 4- channel tapes and a
10-pack of stereo tapes to be given away with the hardware units and to be used in demonstrations.
It was in early 1973 that Continental Dynamics started a second record label named Tele House, Inc.
Tele House's main CD-2000 series would include almost 50 releases. Although some of the product
from Tele House was pressed by major label special products divisions, and was first class, early
offerings had an annoying habit of containing actual Pickwick label discs in the packages. These not
only were limited to nine songs per record, but also sometimes contained live versions or remakes,
almost guaranteeing disappointment from customers. After undoubtedly receiving a lot of negative
feedback, Tele House reverted to relying on special products divisions for future material.
III. Expansion, Sale, Bankruptcy, and Beyond
At the start, Continental Dynamics was located in North Hollywood, California, but in 1970 they started a
branch office in New York City. By January, 1973, they had already expanded their New York office four
times, and decided it was time to move the whole headquarters to New York City [Billboard,
January 8, 1973, page 3]. Business was booming. They rented posh offices at 299 Park Avenue in
Manhattan, and leased expensive cars.
An article on the front page of Billboard's November 9, 1974, issue noted that the 1974 recession
had staggered the TV Mail-Order field, with sales down 20 to 40 percent against a year earlier. It was
not that buyers were dissatisfied with the product, but rather the money squeeze made potential buyers
put money toward necessities and delay purchase of entertainment.
In the same issue, a story on page 14 reported, "Larry Crane and John [sic] Huntsman, major
stockholders in Dynamic House/Tele House, Inc. have sold their interest in the TV mail-order firm." The
buyer was Edward Hutcher. Two months later, in the January 11, 1975, issue of Billboard, a
story on page 4 announced that Dynamic House/Tele House, Inc. had filed a Chapter XI
bankruptcy/reorganization petition December 26, 1974. "Many of the debts listed in the petition were for
office space, and the lease of motor vehicles, although an outstanding contract with Roulette Records
was also cited. Hutcher, Dynamic's president, had listed CBS, RCA, and Capitol Records among the
firm's creditors." Papers listed liabilities at $5.1 million with assets about $2.7 million.
New owner Hutcher was optimistic that the company was viable and solvent and the problems could be
solved. The sale had retained Larry Crane as a consultant. Crane was the one who had designed and
written all the company's television commercials. Apparently the reorganization was successful, since
Tele House continued producing television product for some years thereafter, finally going bust in 1978.
Huntsman went on to a storied career in business (owning several successful companies and gleaning
many national awards) and civil service (serving in the Nixon Administration as Deputy Secretary of Dept
of Health, Education & Welfare, and then on the President's personal staff.) He was active in political
campaigns and also a generous philanthropist. He died in 2018.
The logo seen on Dynamic House and TeleHouse records was actually the stylized logo for Continental
Dynamics, Inc., or CDI. It was on the first records put out by Continental, then Dynamic House, then
TeleHouse. With the sale of the company to Edward Hutcher, the logo was retired.
A bit later, around 1975, TeleHouse albums began being repackaged with the Adam VIII name. Some
Adam VIII product reportedly actually contained records with the Dynamic House labels inside. It is likely
that Roulette Records, as part of the bankruptcy negotiations, obtained/retained the albums they
manufactured for sale or reissue on their own label.
The first Continental release was a 45 with a pink label (far left), released in 1971. The CR-1000 series had both singles and LPs. The 1972 LP CR-1004 (near left) had a green label. Note the Continental Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) logo on both labels. This logo was also found on Dynamic House and TeleHouse labels.
Continental CR-1005 had a white label with black and blue print (far left). The 1973 reissue of CR-1004 as CR-1009 had a red label (near left).
The usual Dynamic House labels had "DYNAMIC HOUSE" in large letters around the top of the label, with the CDI logo just below (far left). Interestingly, the Columbia Special Products pressing (near left), which would normally be a red Columbia label, was the Dynamic House label, but without the logo. Dynamic House labels were in a wide (almost random) variety of colors with the same label design.
The labels for the five-LP box set CD-2016 used special graphics (far left). The TeleHouse label (near left), again issued in a variety of colors, had TELE HOUSE at the top, but no logo, even though the logo was on the record jacket. Most labels had "TELE HOUSE, INC." at the bottom.
Some labels did not have the label name at the bottom (far left). As years went on, the labels became more basic. At near left is a 1977 label. |
