Emus Records was founded in 1974 by
Morris Levy as one of Roulette's budget labels. Originally, it was used to reissue jazz albums from
Roulette's Birdland series, the Emus reissue often with a track or two missing from the original. "Emus"
is a phonetic translation of the Yiddish word for "truth," but some wags suggested it was "Su-me"
backwards, allegedly one of Levy's favorite sayings when asked about royalties. Then again, it may have
just been named for more than one emu. Their address was 17 W. 60th Street, New York City. Since the
label was established after compatible stereo became the norm (in 1968), all the Emus albums were
nominally stereo, and many of them were true stereo if the original album was released that way.
Emus started with legal challenges and ended with legal challenges. The first album on Emus was a
recording of Joan Baez and two others, recorded very early in Baez' career. Joan and two friends, Bill
Wood and Ted Alevizos, were recorded by Stephen Fassett singing eighteen solos, duos, and group
vocals in Boston in May 1959, before any of her well-known works on Vanguard. Fourteen of these
tracks were released in 1963 on the Squire label as The Best of Joan Baez, a ploy that got the
album to #45 on the Billboard LP charts before buyers realized they'd been had. Baez took legal
action and the LP was withdrawn. Baez wasn't any more pleased to see Morris Levy reissue it in 1974.
The next 16 albums on Emus, released in 1974, were reissues of Roulette jazz records, many from
Roulette's Birdland series. These did not have dates of copyright or production printed on the jackets or
labels. At the start of 1975, Emus put out two reissues of Gladys Knight & The Pips from their Fury
Records days (12018, 12019). These had a date of 1965 on the bottom of the back cover, as did some
other LPs issued in 1975. The eight remaining 1975 offerings were also reissues from Roulette's jazz
catalog.
The 1976 releases (12028-12034) were seven early rock and roll albums from Levy's other labels like
Gee and End, as well as Roulette. The next year, 1977, brought a single album, an Impressions
"Greatest Hits" compilation selected from the ABC-Paramount catalog.
The year 1978 brought five albums licensed from Buddah records and their subsidiaries, Kama Sutra
and Pavillion. Many of these had the date on the back cover.
In 1979, Emus turned to the Colpix catalog, a label that Levy purchased "most of" in years past (the rest
went to Colgems/RCA). There were apparently eleven albums planned as Colpix reissues, but five of
these numbers were apparently not used. But that year Emus established a subsidiary label called
Ghent Records. Ghent was used to issue Colpix jazz albums. (The Ghent discography is at the bottom
of this page.) The four known Ghent albums may have been scheduled for some of the missing Emus
catalog numbers.
Finally, in 1979 Emus reissued an Emmylou Harris album that had been released on Jubilee about the
time that label was going bankrupt. Levy bought the master tapes for the Harris album and reissued it as
Emus ES-12052. Harris' lawyers worked overtime to find ways to block this reissue, since Emmylou
stated it was not representative of her current style. Obscure questions such as whether the mechanical
rights were purchased along with the masters, or whether the title track was copyrighted correctly kept
the litigation going for several years. In the end, it cost Emus some tens of thousands of dollars, and the
song in question was declared public domain due to irregularities in the copyright registration. It was kind
of a split decision, but Emus apparently did not release any more albums although they continued
repressing and selling their catalog for years. They finally shut down in 1993.
The Emus label was yellow with black print. There are three variations. The first and simplest had the label name in plain block letters at the top (far left). The second (near left) had a different font for the label name, but otherwise was basically the same. | ||
The third Emus label (far left) had the label name in a stylized print that matched the logo on the album cover. Some examples of this third variation have been found with gold rather than yellow backgrounds. The three variations seemed to appear in that order, but due to repeated pressings and different pressing plants, any given Emus album is likely to have any one of the three variations. The Ghent label (near left) was yellow with black print. |
