The Forum label was budget label, initially releasing new product, but later changing to reissues
only. These albums were usually marketed in grocery store racks and similar non-record store outlets.
Forum Records was established in July, 1959, as the classical arm of Roulette Records. Roulette
President Morris Levy announced in July that Roulette had purchased 20 masters from Saga Films, Ltd.
in France, and that the first nine albums would be released in August, 1959. They would be budget
priced at $1.98 mono or $2.98 stereo. Levy announced that his plan was to record classical music in
Europe himself, and to purchase masters from other sources there. [Billboard, August 2, 1959,
page 3]. In the September 7, 1959, issue of Billboard (page 2), Roulette officials noted their
impatience with the distributors' reluctance to sell to rack jobbers (those who stocked racks in grocery
stores, drug stores, variety (dime) stores, and the like), costing the record label significant sales. They
noted they didn't want to go around the distributors and deal directly with rack jobbers, but they will if
they have to. The new Forum line would be a test to see the lay of the land.
In late March, 1960, Roulette Vice President Joe Kolsky unveiled a new Forum pop music series at the
National Association of Rack Merchandisers' convention in Las Vegas. Like the classical series, the pop
records would be sold at $1.98 for mono and $2.98 for stereo. The first four albums were announced at
convention time for April release, with ten more promised "shortly". At that time, Forum Records had
released the 20 classical albums. [Billboard, April 4, 1960, page 9]. No sooner did they start the
pop series than they were sued by another Forum Records, Inc. That company apparently started in
1953 and had released eight opera packages. Roulette told the court that they had inquired of the Music
Performances Trust Fund and found no previous use of the label name Forum. The request for an
injunction against Roulette was denied, and it was clear sailing. [Billboard, April 11, 1960, page
2].
In May, Forum released two more albums according to Cash Box [May 14, 1960, page 62]. The
rest of the "ten more" promised at the Las Vegas convention were released by the end of 1960. The
original plan for Forum's pop series was to issue new records, not reissues, at bargain prices. This
proved to be costly in terms of studio and mastering time, and the records were not selling enough, even
at a bargain price, to allow the desired profit. By the end of 1960, Morris Levy had a new and different
plan.
At the start of 1961, the ownership of the Forum label changed...well, sort of. The label's ownership was
henceforth attributed to "Jaymo Products, Inc." and although that company is fairly obscure, it's a safe
bet that the "Mo" part of the name referred to "Mo Levy." All the releases on this second phase of Forum
Records were owned by Levy's Roulette and Tico Records or were reissues of previous Forum releases
in the 16000 series. They even used the same stampers as the original labels, as the dead wax showed
the original record numbers scratched out. No new recording time, no mastering time, not even the cost
of new "metal parts," or stampers. Levy also decided to skip the distributors and work directly with rack
jobbers, eliminating the middle man's cut and avoiding the cost of advertising in the trade
magazines. Budget albums produced and sold on the cheap: the new and improved plan.
These "new plan" releases were issued in the Forum F/FS-9000 series. Almost all of the Forum 9000
series albums are straight reissues from the Roulette or Tico catalogs. If the original album being
reissued had 12 tracks, so did the reissue version.
In 1964, the label name changed to "Forum Circle." A new owner was identified as "Connoisseur
Record Corporation" with an address of 160 Passaic Avenue, Kearny, New Jersey. Kearny was the
location of a 100,000 square foot pressing facility owned by Banker's Life and Casualty Co., an
insurance company out of Chicago. Connoisseur Records (owned by Banker's Life) was founded in
1963 to press records for several different labels (Artia, Parliament, Supraphon, and M-K) all releasing
classical masters from Eastern Europe or Russia. It had obscure connections to Jaymo Products via
some borrowing and bankruptcy of the original Artia label the year before. Morris Levy apparently
negotiated some sort of deal whereby Connoisseur would continue pressing the Forum line of releases
under the Forum Circle imprint. Levy's involvement with Connoisseur and Forum Circle is
unquestionable, since the Roulette and Tico masters were being made available in the deal, as well as
some of Levy's other albums on the End label.
Connoisseur, however, did not fully sign on to Levy's plan to use existing stampers to reissue product.
Once they took over, many of their reissues deleted songs from the original albums. Typical was for the
original album to have twelve tracks, but the Forum Circle reissue to delete two and go with ten tracks.
And they were no longer selling directly to rack jobbers, but used a distributor called Adam Record
Distributing Corporation, owned by – you guessed it – Morris Levy.
Connoisseur continued putting out Forum Circle releases, many of which were just reissues of previous
Forum albums, throughout the year into summer, 1964. In the August 22, 1964, issue of Billboard
(page 6, 11), Larry Press, the head of Connoisseur Records, was noting with pride that sales in June
and July were 400% over the same months in 1963. This might have been more impressive if
Connoisseur hadn't started business in mid-1963. Connoisseur also recently picked up another label,
Urania, and their budget subsidiary, Avon Records. He noted that Forum Circle had about 120 titles in
its catalog (probably Forum 9001-9101 and some of the releases from the earlier Forum series, as well
as a short classical GLS-4000 series on Forum Circle). He promised that
30 new releases would be out on September 1.
These 30 new releases consisted of 10 new albums in the 9100 series (9102-9111, some of which were
reissues of Avon or Urania albums, as well as a few new reissues from Roulette masters), a new pop
reissue series (100/2100) which had 10 new releases, drawing heavily from the Urania label,
and a new ten-album country and western series from Avon's vaults (500/2500).
The C&W series was a straight reissue of a 1962 series released on the Wrangler label. It was on the
Forum/Avon label according to the album jackets, although most of the labels still said Forum Circle.
The address of Connoisseur also changed from Kearny, New Jersey, to 370 Seventh Avenue,
New York City about this time.
After the 30-album release on September 1 (nearly all from Urania/Avon), little or no additional product
was issued, although second and third pressings of these albums were made, judging from the changing
labels on the records. At the end of 1964 it had been about a year since the deal with Morris Levy, and
no new masters or tapes from the Roulette labels seemed to be forthcoming. It's possible it was a
one-year licensing deal, and when Levy's musical resources left, Forum Circle became a thing of the
past.
The original Forum series, the F/FS-70000 series of classical releases, used a black label with gold print. Bending around the top of the label was "FORUM RECORDS / A DIVISION OF ROULETTE RECORDS, INC.", just above the Forum logo. Mono labels (far left) and stereo labels (near left) differed only in the "STEREO" designation to the right of the center hole. This is also the same label used for the F-32000 series.
The label for the 16000 series was initiallly black with gold print (later black with silver print), the Forum logo above the center hole. The attribution curving around the top of the label said, "Forum Records/A Division of Roulette Records, Inc." The Forum logo on the front cover also incorporates "A Division of Roulette Records, Inc." into the logo (see logo at the top of this page). The mono label (far left) and the stereo label (near left) were the same except for the "STEREO" to the right of the center hole for the stereo offerings.
The 9000 series label started as dark red with black print. As with the 16000 series the only difference between the mono (far left) and stereo albums (near left) was the stereo designation at the right of the center hole. "Forum Records/A Division of Jaymo Products Inc." was around the top of the label, replacing "A Division of Roulette Records, Inc." from the 16000 series. All mention of Roulette was removed, including on the cover logos. It was the same label design as before, with a change in color and the change of ownership name.
If there was any doubt about "Jaymo Products" being a part of the Roulette empire, second pressings of 9047 through 9057 had the "Jaymo" changed back to "Roulette." Original pressings of all these numbers had the "Jaymo" labels. Mono (far left) and stereo (near left) labels again only differed by the stereo designation to the right of the center hole. This label was also used for second pressings of some back catalog items, such as F/FS-9018.
Starting with 9058 and continuing to 9077, just before the label's name change to Forum Circle, original labels were a deep red for mono (far left) and a royal blue for stereo releases (near left). The notation bending around the top of the label was removed, but the design was similar. Many second pressings or reissues of prior numbers also used these labels.
In 1964, the label name was changed to Forum Circle, although the change in the logo was minor and it kept the same catalog sequence. On the Forum Circle records, the notation on the jacket and label states, "Mfg. by Connoisseur Record Corp., 160 Passaic Avenue, Kearny, New Jersey." The label colors changed to light blue for mono (far left) and yellow for stereo (near left). After the Forum Circle change, several previously released albums were reissued with these labels.
Many of the Forum Circle albums in the 7G-100 series had the same Forum Circle labels as the blue and yellow labels, above, probably due to using up old label blanks. The 7G-100 series soon was sporting new orange labels for both mono (far left) and stereo (near left), with a large block letter "CIRCLE" around the bottom. These didn't last long and gave way to the blue labels shown below.
Most of the records in the 7G-100 and 7G-500 series had blue labels like the orange version above. The blue color ranged from very light blue, almost white (far left) to the light blue shown at near left, which was by far the more common color.
The GL-300/GLS-4300 series also had the blue label with the large "CIRCLE" at the bottom, the stereo version is shown at far left. Finally, some of the albums in the 7G-500 country and western series had a Forum-Avon label as shown at near left. |
