By far the most of George Goldner's LPs were issued on the Tico label, which was the earliest
(formed 1948) and longest lasting of his labels. Despite the fact that Goldner sold his interests in the
Roulette, Rama, Gee, and Tico labels in 1957, he produced some Tico recordings into the late 1960s.
Major producers of Tico's recordings until 1974 were Teddy Reig, Pancho Cristal, Miguel Estivill, Art
Kapper and Joe Cain. Tico mostly used the A&R Studios and Broadway Studios in New York for
their recordings. One of Tico's favorite sound engineers was Fred Weinberg, well known in Latin Music
in New York City.
Tico Records was formed in New York in 1948 as a partnership between George Goldner (pictured,
right) and WLIB disk jockey Art "Pancho" Raymond, along with a few more radio people as silent
partners, mostly to get the records played on the radio. Two of their first signings were percussionist Tito
Puente and singer/percussionist Tito Rodriguez. In 1950, after having good success with Latin singles
on Tico, Goldner and Raymond had a serious falling out over money and the dreaded "creative
direction." Recording sessions ground to a halt, and Tico's artists drifted to paying jobs elsewhere.
Goldner was finally able to buy Raymond out a year later, thanks to a new partner, nightclub owner Joe
Kolsky.
By late 1951, Goldner was finally able to lure back his artists, which resulted in a non-stop recording
schedule that resulted in a slew of 10-inch LPs released in 1951-2.
The early artists on Tico were some of the giants of the genre. These included the so-called "Mambo
Kings" Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, and Machito, all veteran dance band leaders by the time they began
recording for Goldner in the early days.
Tito Puente (Ernesto Antonio Puente, Jr., pictured, left) was a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist whose
performing career spanned five decades. He was the mainstay of the Tico label for its first ten years,
then left for RCA, only to return to Tico in the 1960s. The albums Puente recorded for various labels
over the years number a hundred or more. The rock group Santana covered Puente's "Oye Como Va"
virtually note-for-note, running the song up to #13 on the U.S. popular music charts in 1971.
Tito Rodriguez (singer, timbales, vibes, arranger, composer, pictured, right) began his career in Puerto
Rico before he finished High School, recording with Conjunto Tipico Lali at the age of 13. Before signing
with Tico in 1948, he had already worked with Enric Madriguera, Xavier Cugat, and Noro Morales. He
recorded many albums for Tico and other labels before his death in February, 1973.
Machito (Frank Raul Grillo, pictured, left) was born in 1912 in Cuba, where his father manufactured
cigars. His early experience included singing and dancing with his father's employees, and by 1928 he
was working with bands professionally. He had a stellar carrer before his death in 1984, including some
sought-after albums recorded for Tico.
Joe Loco (José Estévez, Jr., pictured, right) joined Tico as part of Tito Rodriguez' band,
but Goldner
encouraged him to cut some solo piano sides. Loco had a big hit in 1952 in the Latin community with an
embellished, uptempo version of "Tenderly." In 1953, his recording of "Gee" competed with the Crows'
version (on another of George Goldner's labels, Rama), but Loco's jazzy piano instrumental could barely
be recognized as the same song. His "El Baión" just missed the national R&B charts in 1954. He
was one of Tico top sellers until he signed with Columbia Records in September, 1955. After a lengthy
career, Joe died in March, 1988, at the age of 66.
The ten-inch LP series, starting in 1951, was pressed up in relatively small batches. Popularity of the
albums meant they were re-pressed several times, resulting in minor differences in covers and label
type. For example, the first LP, TICO-100, is known to have at least four distinct covers and several
label variations. Cover variations for many of the remaining releases in the 10-inch LP series have been
found.
Early pressings in the 10-inch series used dark red labels with silver print (far left). The banner over the TICO name at the top read, "EL REY DEL MAMBO." Later in 1952, the labels changed to medium red with the same design (near left). In both these labels, the album title and artist were in non-serif caps. These labels were used until late 1953 or early 1954.
In late 1953 or 1954, the font on the red labels changed to have the title and artist use serifed fonts (far left) This type face was used into the 12-inch series, also. The initial 12-inch Tico label (near left) was black with silver print; with the banner saying "KING OF THE CHA CHA MAMBO." This label was used on 1956 and 1957 releases up until LP-1045. Second pressings of these albums often had the label below.
From LP-1046 in early 1958, the banner changed to "HI-FIDELITY", and a small notation that Tico was a division of Roulette Records was added below the logo at the top (far left). This notation continued until LP-1085 in 1962, after which it was generally discontinued (although it appeared sporadically after that as label blanks were used up). Stereo issues used the same label with "STEREO" to the left of the center hole (near left).
A few albums near the end of 1962 were issued with a blue label with silver print (far left), as well as the normal black label. Starting with LP-1100 in 1963, the label changed to a pattern label with light and dark orange colors (near left). The Tico logo at the top changed font and no longer had a banner.
Stereo issues using the orange pattern label had "STEREO" to the right of the center hole. (far left). Promotional labels were white with black print (near left).
Some of the orange pattern labels had a more pink color (far left). The CLP-1300 series had a small "Compatable Stereo" notation to the right of the center hole (near left). This label was also used for the TSLP/JMTS-1400 series. |
