Compose records was a subsidiary of Synthetic Plastics Company (SPC) of Newark, New Jersey.
Compose featured pop music, Christmas albums and international music. In 1968 the label name
changed to Ambassador Records. Many of the numbers were not used before 1968 and were later used
in the 1980s for the corresponding vinyl issues for CDs.
The Compose offerings boasted "Super Long Play" albums with "Over One Hour Of Music." But in order
to cram this much music on a conventional-size album, some steps needed to be taken. To save the
normal 5-10 second inter-band silence, the songs were often grouped into multi-song bands rather than
individual tracks.
Compose, as well as other SPC labels, regularly recycled tracks, renaming them or changing artist
credits. The idea seemed to be to get albums out quickly, but in doing so, attention to detail was often
glaringly lacking. For example, discogs.com has a detailed analysis of Compose 98004, which in
addition to recycled songs, had the same song appearing twice and a song listed on the cover and label
that wasn't included on the album at all. Names were sometimes misspelled (e.g., "Londondary" vs.
"Londonderry" on 98007). Sound quality varied jaringly; clear tracks were followed by muddy, noisy
tracks. Given the history of the sources, this is not surprising. Record collectors have long referred to
this label disparagingly as "De-compose Records."
From Discog.com (Compose 98004):
This album is a compilation of retitled and reattributed tracks primarily from other Newark-based
Synthetic Plastics Company sublabels such as Diplomat Records and Promenade. A few tracks are
borrowed from other labels as well, such as Coronet Records, Contessa, and Rex Records. Several of
the tracks on this collection were attributed to Frankie Stein And His Ghouls after sound effects were
added. Many of the tracks also appeared on Tito Martinez And His Orchestra, Joel Grey And The
Greyhounds - Dance Party Discotheque with added reverb and stereo channels reversed.
The song "Blue Waters" appears twice on this album, once on each side, mistitled on the A-side as
"Doin' The Hully Gully" (track A4). The song "Watusi Way" also appears twice on the album, once on
each side, titled as "In The Swim" (track A9) and correctly titled as track B9.
The tracks on each side of the record are grouped into four visible bands, although the individual songs
don't run together seamlessly. This unorthodox grouping may have been necessary in order to fit almost
62 minutes of music onto the album.
The group The Beachnuts (spelled "The Beachnuts" on the front cover and "The Beechnuts" on the back
cover) is likely unrelated to this collection.
Following is how these tracks have appeared on other albums:

The label used for most releases was purple/magenta with black lettering and the label name in white. Mono is shown at far left, stereo shown at near left.
Although the basic color was purple, colors varied, with some more pink than purple (far left). A variation of the pink label was used near the end of the series for repressings (near left).
Repressings also used a teal label (far left). In 1987, when Compose was issuing CDs, the vinyl counterparts used a grey label with black print with pink logo and lettering highlights (near left). |
