Diplomat was a high-volume, long-running subsidiary of Synthetic Plastics Company (SPC) of
Newark, N.J. It started about 1961 as a continuation of the Pirouette label FM-1 series, Pirouette being
an SPC label that was discontinued. Diplomat then exploded in 1962 with a flood of reissues from the
Promenade, Spin-O-Rama, and other labels.
Eventually, Diplomat switched to original releases featuring songs of the times with non-hit artists
mimicking the hit records. They also had a short series of international records, as well as two
Christmas series and a country & western series. The Diplomat children's series was a reissue of the
series on the SPC Rocking Horse label, and is covered under that discography.
Release dates are approximate.
The original Diplomat label was used in the FM-1 series in 1961. The earlier numbers in this series were on the Pirouette label or the Promenade label. When the Diplomat label started, it used the Promenade label with a Diplomat overprint as shown far left. This label was used sometimes in the later 2200 series (near left).
The original stand-alone Diplomat label was black with a white field at the left of the label. There was a generic medal with a red ribbon shown in the white field. Around the bottom of the label was "SYNTHETIC PLASTICS CO., NEWARK, N.J. USA" Mono is shown at far left, stereo at near left.
After the black and white labels as shown above, in 1965 Diplomat changed to an all black label with silver print. The main version of this had a series of expanding red lines above the label name, reminiscent of an "awning" (far left). This label was actually a variation of the older Promenade label. Reissues of the "awning" label were many and varied. A common variation was black with white print, but with white lines instead of red (far left).
Later variations were pink (far left) or purple (near left) with white lines.
After the red "awning" label, in 1967 Diplomat switched to a blue label with silver print, a stylized "D" logo above the label name (far left). Later, this same design was used with a pink label (near left).
By 1969, the pink label changed to red (far left). Reissues sometimes used plain block-letter labels such as shown in yellow at near right (which was the label for FM-112 and FM-114). These block-letter reissues were also seen in black, blue, and other colors. |

All the releases in the FM series on Diplomat were stereo only, as the corresponding mono releases were on the Promenade label with the same catalog numbers.

Caroleer/Diplomat/Tinkerbell X/SX-1700 Christmas Series: The first eight releases in this series (1700-1707) were on the Caroleer label. Later releases (1726 and higher) were on the Tinkerbell label. Both are listed in the respective label discographies. These albums were reissued every year, and consequently are known with a variety of labels. The initial release (1708) first had the black and white label with the red ribbon. By the second release (1709), the most common label is the black label with the red "awning." Several successive releases also had this label, after which the blue label, then the pink label were used. With the constant reissue, any number of reissue labels were used.
