The Guest Star label was a subsidiary of Synthetic Plastics Company of Newark, New Jersey. The
albums were usually sold in grocery store racks or similar venues, not usually in record stores. Nor did
Guest Star bother to get their releases listed in such industry references as Schwann Catalog, so
assigning dates to these releases is very difficult. At best, the dates given for release are guesses within
a year or two.
The earliest releases in the 1400 series used a white label with black print and a green graphic star. We
think these were issued in 1963. After that, the label changed to a purple (sometimes pink) label, which
was used for most of the remaining issues until 1967. At some point in 1967, the label changed to plain
black with silver lettering and no graphics. This is a common sign for labels that are experiencing
financial problems, as the one-color print labels are cheaper to produce and saves the company some
money in hard times. The 1900 series used the purple label, which would date
them at least as early as 1964, but the final two releases used the black label with silver print.
The white label (mono, far left; stereo, near left) was the original label for the first 15 albums in the G/GS-1400 series.
Starting with G/GS-1416, the label changed to the pink/purple label used for the rest of the series. Colors for this label varied, ranging from pink, as shown for the mono label at far left, to the purple shown for stereo at near left. This label was used for most of the G/GS-1900 series as well. The last release we have seen with the pink/purple label is 1487 in 1967, after which Guest Star used the black label below.
The black label (shown mono, far left, and stereo, near left) was used starting with 1488 in 1967, and lasted until the end of the series. The last two issues in the 1900 series also used the black label. In addition, repressings of earlier albums during this 1967 or later period also used the black label.
In addition to the black label used for repressings, Guest Star sometimes used a yellow label (far left) or a grey label (near left). These were not used for original pressings, but for repressings only. |
