Parade Records started in 1950 as a subsidiary of Synthetic Plastics Company (SPC) of Newark,
NJ. In 1961, it was sold (along with the Spin-O-Rama label) to Premier Albums, Inc. of New York City.
Henry LaPidus, manager of SPC's empire of endless record labels, joined Premier at that time as sales
manager for Premier's budget labels, and the "new" releases on Parade ground to a halt. All the
releases listed here were released under SPC.
Premier wasted no time in reissuing Parade albums with a notation that they were henceforth a division
of Premier (making the lineage confusing for record collectors). The only albums listed here initially put
out by Premier were in the 1980 "aerobics" series.
All release dates are approximate,
The earliest Parade albums were released on red vinyl and had a blue label (far left). The best-known label was a red label with the same design (center left). The SP-1 series used a black version of the same label (near left). All the 10-inch LPs had these labels, as well as a few of the earliest 12-inch albums.
The longest Parade series, the SP-300 series, started in 1957 and lasted until 1961. For that series, the label switched to a black label with yellow print featuring a drum major on each side of the label (far left). Later a yellow version of the "drum major" label was used. The yellow mono (Hi-Fi) label is shown at center left, with the yellow stereo counterpart at near left.
For repressings, Parade would sometimes use a black label with silver print and no graphics, examples of which are shown at far and center left. The "Hits A' Poppin'" albums in the SP-100 and SP-200 series sometimes had a "Hits A' Poppin'" label as shown at near left.
A variation of the Hits A' Poppin' label is shown at far left. Some of the releases on the SP-100 and SP-200 series were on the Prom label, which was also an SPC subsidiary. The regular yellow Prom label is shown at center left, with an orange variation at near left.
In the 1980s, Premier revived the Parade label generally as an aerobics label. The basic label for these 1980s releases is shown at far left. A few releases had custom labels as illustrated at center and near left. |
