Pirouette was a subsidiary of Synthetic Plastics Company (SPC) of Newark, NJ.
The Pirouette FM-1 series was shared with the Promenade label. Albums were issued on either
Pirouette or Promenade or both with the same cover pictures. They were all stereo issues, cashing in on
the rise of stereo in 1959. Original labels for the majority or the issues had both the Promenade and
Pirouette names on the labels (see illustration below). Later the Promenade labels were green with silver
print.
The first 70 or so albums were the same series (with the same numbers) as on the Spin-O-Rama label
(one of the subsidiary labels of Premier Albums, Inc. Of New York City). It is not known what the
relationship between these two labels was, whether a leasing arrangement, a purchase agreement, or
just a mutual sharing of masters (some SPC albums later appeared on Premier labels, so there was
some connection).
After FM-70, the Spin-O-Rama series continues for more than one hundred additional albums, but these
were not included on the Promenade/Pirouette labels.
After FM-92, the Pirouette label was discontinued in favor of the Diplomat label.
All release dates are approximate.
The first Pirouette label was an overprint of the Promenade label (far left). Promenade albums in the FM series had the same label, although the covers differed in the label name and the stereo banner. Later in the series, the Pirouette label changed to a grey and white and multicolor swirl, with a dancer's silhoette at the top (near left.)
After about FM-57 in the series, the label changed again, to a yellow label with black print (far left). This label was used to repress many of the earlier items in the series. Reissue labels inclued the green label shown at near left.
Reissues also are found with a pink label as shown at far left. The later Canadian-based Pirouette label associated with Janvs Records in Canada and distributed here by SPC's Ambassador label used a green label as shown at near left.
Initial Promenade issues in the FM-1 series used the Promenade/Pirouette label as shown above. Midway in the series (and in repressings), Promenade used a green label with silver print (far left). Late in the series the label changed to a black label with multicolor lines abover the label name (near left). |

Pirouette/Janvs JA/JAS 19000 Classical Series:
This was a different company from the Synthetic Plastics Company (SPC) Pirouette label above. It was a Canadian-American company founded in 1965 by Giveon Cornfield. It is only included here because it was distributed by Ambassador Records, which was an SPC company. In 1966, it was taken over by Everest Records, but it continued to be distributed by Ambassador. Associated with Janvs Records; some labels say Janvs/Pirouette. The catalog prefix is indicative of the Janvs label.
