Rocking Horse was a subsidiary of Synthetic Plastics Company of Newark, NJ. They featured
children's records derived from the Peter Pan catalog.
Some of the tracks on these releases go back as far as the late 1940s on Peter Pan records' 7" or 10"
78rpm or 7" 45rpm releases. These albums were often collections of those early tracks. For the purpose
of artists' names on the Rocking Horse albums, the original nameless studio musicians were mostly
renamed "The Rocking Horse Orchestra and Chorus" or some variations. (Peter Pan releases featured
"The Peter Pan Orchestra & Chorus"; Diplomat reissues featured "The Diplomat Orchestra & Chorus,"
etc.).
For example, the track "Puff 'n Toot" on N-5005 was originally on Peter Pan 78rpm single L-15
about 1950 (red vinyl), which credited narration by Jack Arthur with the Peter Pan Orchestra and Chorus,
directed by Vicky Kasen. In addition to having been released on Rocking Horse twice (5005 and 5085), it
was also issued on Peter Pan 45rpm 45-709, Peter Pan LP 8239, Peter Pan 45 1955 (with book), 10'
78rpm Peter Pan 2242 (orange vinyl), Peter Pan 45rpm 1442... well, you get the idea. In addition,
"Rocking Horse" LPs sometimes had "Diplomat" labels.
The albums listed here were released initially on the Rocking Horse children's record label, then
reissued on the Diplomat or Tinkerbell labels. The first two dozen or so albums were also released in
the Peter Pan PP-5000 series.
The Diplomat reissues had mostly the same covers, with the notation that it was the "Rocking Horse
Series." The Diplomat catalog numbers were the same as the Rocking Horse catalog numbers, but late
in the series (5080s), the Diplomat reissues were discontinued.
Covers shown may be either the Rocking Horse or Diplomat issues, and if significant differences were
found, both. Release dates are approximate dates of the Rocking Horse issues.
The initial Rocking Horse label was yellow with black print. Mono is shown at far left, stereo at near left.
Later the design changed to a yellow label with a large rocking horse logo, as shown far left. The tan label at near left was used only occasionally.
The purple label at far left was used sometimes for repressings on the Rocking Horse label. At near left, the Diplomat "Rocking Horse Series" label used for the reissue series. |
